Prospect Spotlight: Chase Courbat (2021)
When the Class of 2021 prospect rankings are released this fall, there’s a very good chance Cedar Falls big-man Chase Courbat will be near the top.
The 6-foot-8 rising sophomore has been tremendous this spring, with both Martin Brothers 15U and while playing with Cedar Falls in high school team camps.
With good size and ability, Courbat could dominate at the 4A level as soon as next season. And he’s working hard to develop as a more complete player as he heads into what could be a breakout season.
“I’m working on ways to incorporate my outside shooting abilities into my game play. I’m continuing to work on my strength and athleticism as well as becoming able to guard all five positions on the floor,” said Courbat.
As a freshman with a Cedar Falls team that won a 4A state title — its first-ever — Courbat played sparingly off the bench. He averaged 1.6 points per game.
“I think freshman season went pretty well, I got to build relationships with the coaches and learn the system. Also getting the experience of winning a state championship in my first year was unforgettable,” he said.
Courbat says getting the opportunity to play with one of the best Iowa high school players ever, AJ Green, was a special opportunity.
“One of the biggest takeaways was having AJ as a mentor, he really showed me how to be a leader and how hard you need to work to be great,” said Courbat. “My role as a freshman was to give good minutes and contribute when I got the chance, and to challenge the upperclassman at practice and to learn the system.”
Next season, Courbat will play heavy minutes, and will be a key player on a Cedar Falls team that could again contend for a state title.
“Sophomore season will be different without AJ, but I think our team will still be dangerous because we have size, length, good perimeter shooters, and great coaching,” he said. “I expect my roll to grow and to be a key contributor on the offensive and defensive end.”
In the meantime, he’ll anchor the paint for one of the Midwest’s best AAU teams, Martin Brothers 15U.
“The offseason has been going really well. We have a great group of guys and we all put the team first, we just had a great weekend out in The Bronx and are ready and excited for the July live periods.” said Courbat.
Still quite young, the recruitment is something that hasn’t yet kicked into full gear for the talented big-man. But soon it will, and Division I programs will likely be involved.
“It’s (recruitment) been going pretty good,” said Courbat. “I have been contacted and played in front of several Division I coaches, and expect recruiting to really pick up after the July live periods.”
