Prospect Profile: Micah Garrett (2020 West Linn HS/Nike Team Northwest 16U)
Micah Garrett is ready to step up his game. The bouncy 6-foot-3, 170-pound guard proved himself as an offensive force at West Linn this past season, but he knows his role will be slightly changing his junior year. He’s playing AAU ball this spring with Nike Team Northwest’s 16U squad on the EYBL circuit in an effort to prepare himself for the fall and impress college coaches in the process.
“We didn’t win a game (on the EYBL circuit) but I think we played really good as a team and some of the games we should have won,” Garrett said. “I averaged about 27 a game and I’m just getting used to role of carrying a team. I’m going to need to be a leader this year (at West Linn) so I’m trying to get into the role of being a leader.”
Last year as a sophomore, Garrett proved himself as a scorer. He relentlessly attacks the basket and uses his athleticism to finish at the rim. Garrett can also step back and knock the three but is working on making it more of a consistent force. “Everyone knows I can get to the basket and I’m athletic, so I’m working on my jumpshot a lot,” Garrett said. “I’m working on my defense and rebounding too.”
After a breakout sophomore campaign and solid play on the AAU circuit, Garrett has started to pick up college interest. Since college coaches could contact him on June 15th, he’s received calls from Portland State, Eastern Washington, Portland, and Colorado State. Oregon State, Washington State, and Idaho have been in contact previously. While he believes an offer could be coming soon, he’s staying open in the process at this point.
“Just the right fit for me where I can come in and play my game,” Garrett said. “If I get an offer that’s going to be really nice. But I would wait to wait on it and see what else might come my way.”
In July Garrett will suit back up for Nike Team Northwest and he’s excited about the opportunity. “I want to win a few tournaments and play against the best competition in the country,” Garrett said. “Hopefully I can get an offer or a few.”
Garrett currently ranks as the #1 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
