A Scout’s Take: Maranatha Block Party (Most Productive)
A Scout’s Take: Maranatha Block Party (Most Productive)
PASADENA, CA— The month of June is always one of the more exciting times of the basketball evaluation process as players leap from one team to another and new freshman arise out of the horizon. Some of those 2022s include Benny Gealer (Rolling Hills Prep), Cameron Thrower (Harvard Westlake) and Christian Moore (Brentwood). In this installment fill look at some of the better prospects. This installment we’ll look at the most productive players at the event.
Sam Clareman (Brentwood)
2019, SG, 6-foot-3, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Clareman is a wiry shooter who has become more than just a shot maker from outside. He still needs to gain considerable strength to finish through contact, but his ball skills in transition have improved and he’s an astute passer.
Vince Fiez (Alemany)
2019, WF, 6-foot-4, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: When it comes to knocking in spot-up jump shots, Fiez is one of the best in So-Cal. He always gets his feet set and his release is tight. He isn’t an explore athlete, but he uses his strong physique to muscle his way to the basket and he always gives an honest effort.
Sean Harlston (Dominguez)
2019, CG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Once Harlston gave up football last summer, his basketball skills have evolved immensely. He always plays hard and is an explosive athlete, but now he can knock in the 3-point shot (good lift) and his playmaking skills have improved as well. Definite sleeper.
Kalani Atkins (Cleveland)
2019, CG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: Atkins, who transferred from Heritage Christian, is a skilled lefty who can play both guard spots on some level. He is a prolific shooter from deep and he has the savvy and vision to play both guard spots.
Darius Mason (Pasadena)
2019, WF, 6-foot-5, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: At this level, Mason is a straight beast. The burly wing-type plays with tenacious motor at both ends—especially when attacking the rim. He hits the glass hard at both ends and his driving prowess is tough to deal as he has the frame and athleticism to finish through contact. In order for him to get some D1 looks, his jump shot must improve.
