Prospect Spotlight: Carlos Esquibel (2020)
A 6’3 2020 wing Topeka’s Carlos Esquibel is putting together a strong summer running with the Trojans’ varsity this summer, earning a key role with the squad and showing his all-around game at the KaMo Shootout in Overland Park.
Esquibel handles the ball and creates for himself and others and helps space the floor with his outside shooting and versatility.
“I’m a player who can handle the ball and create for others and also space the floor and play multiple positions,” Esquibel said. “I’m also a player who like the challenge of guarding the opposing teams best player.”
Topeka is coming off a third-place finish at the Kansas 6A state tournament and Esquibel says his first season playing varsity basketball was a success as he adjusted to the speed of the game.
“I was talking it all in as the season went and when we got to the state tournament in Wichita i played a pretty big role for us at times,” he says. “I would be the person to get us going and get us some momentum.”
Esquibel has spent the offseason competing for the Kansas Hoggs and recently competed in Omaha, Neb.
“It’s all been pretty fun being my first year back playing summer after taking a break last summer to let my knee heal,” Esquibel says. “So I’ve just been trying to enjoy every moment and work on leading a team and learning what it takes to win.”
Esquibel says he has spent a lot of time in the gym during the offseason working on his jump shot and working on his form and release.
“I’ve been working a lot on getting my jumper consist and adjusting my form and moves getting everything faster and sharper and isolation moves and beating the defender off the dribble, a lot of combo moves and counters,” he says. “I’ve also been working on my finishing around the rim, I like to switch up my finishes and never be predictable.”
