Grassroots Update: Team Fly North 16U
Team Fly is excited about the future because they have a 16U squad full of players with a lot of potential. Coach Joe Jackson recently caught PrepHoops Oregon up on the roster of the North team and how they have played so far this spring going into July.
Here’s a breakdown:
Jack Chlumak (2020 Newberg HS) – Chlumak has been the workhourse and floor leader for Team Fly. He’s been a leader vocally but also with his high level of energy on the court. Blessed with size at the point at 6-foot-3, Chlumak has the ability to take the ball to the basket and finish plays. The key for him remains the development of a consistent perimeter shot.
Erik Frazier (2020 Grant HS) – Frazier has helped lead by example on the floor, doing a lot of the little things that don’t necessarily show up on the stat sheet like take charges and play scrappy defense. Offensively he’s been a threat from the perimeter.
Joe Juhala (2020 West Linn HS) – Juhala has added an athletic dimension to the team with his ability to play above the rim on both ends. He’s long at 6-foot-6 and can hit the face up jumper, but is working on his ball-handling and developing a post game.
Josh Leak (2020 Sumner (WA) HS) – Leak is the team’s resident shooter – and he does it very well as he has consistently knocked down threes all spring. His focus this summer will be working becoming a more consistent defender.
Cody Carlson (2020 Lake Oswego HS) – Carlson is a big body in the post who has handled most of the dirty work inside, both on the boards and on defense. Also a football standout, he uses his body to his advantage. Not a big scorer, but he’s been able to provide some putbacks when needed.
Oswaldo Velasco (2020 Wilsonville HS) – Velasco has provided depth at the wing positions at 6-foot-2. He has a decent shot when he’s in rhythm and simply needs to work on getting a bit more physical on the basketball floor.
Jacob Slifka (2020 Banks HS) – Slifka, at 6-foot-4, has a thin and long frame. He has a solid mid-range jumper but can also slash to the basket.
Team Fly may also add some more players for the month of July.
