Weekend Recap: Trinity, Douglass win Championships
There was a lot of basketball played in Central Kentucky over the weekend as the “summer ball” season nears it close. Frederick Douglass won the CKY State tournament while Trinity won the annual Shelby County/Collins tournament. Here’s a look at some results.
Collins/Shelby County Tournament:
- Trinity won the championship by beating Lafayette after back to back to back to back games on Saturday afternoon that would leave anyone struggling. Seniors David Johnson and Jamil Hardaway led the Rocks to the championship.
- Walter Johnson has made a transfer from Trinity to Ballard for his senior season. Johnson looked good all weekend and is playing the point guard spot for the Bruins.
- Senior Alex Holley showed improved range on his jump shot and hit multiple 3s against McCracken County.
- Madison Central is reloading. They lost to Lafayette in one semifinal. Isaiah Cozart is the only returning starter for the Indians.
- McCracken County’s Jackson Sivils was impressive. Armed with a tight handle and quick release, the lefty shot the ball well and showed skill getting to the rim. The only thing he didn’t do was finish with his right hand well. McCracken’s 2021 PG Noah Dumas was fun to watch as well.
- North Bullitt’s 2021 duo of TJ Toney and Zeke Montgomery were impressive. Montgomery is a new name that will show up on our 2021 rankings soon.
- The most fun game I watched was West Jessamine against Collins. West led by 10 with 30 seconds left and Collins managed to send the game to overtime off a Dayvion McKnight 3 and won the game in sudden death overtime when Junior Tyson Turner hit a 3 off McKnight’s assist.
- LaRue County won 3 bracket games before losing the semifinal to Trinity. Recent Louisville football commitment Anthony Adkins was impressive and hit multiple 3s for the Hawks.
Central Kentucky State Tournament:
- Frederick Douglass topped Scott County – Red to win the tournament on Sunday. Scott was without Michael Moreno. Douglass returns a lot of talent this season and won the title without Junior Nathan Mack.
- Newport had an impressive run on the weekend before falling to Douglass in the semifinals. Seniors Donnie Miller and Tahj Harding are going to be two of the top players in the 9th region this season.
- Clinton County and new WKU commitment Jackson Harlan had a great weekend. They knocked off George Rogers Clark before they lost to Scott County in the quarterfinals.
- Speaking of GRC, they went 2-3 on the weekend with all 3 losses coming by 4 combined points. Senior Jordan Graham is playing well but some of the supporting cast was missing due to football and others are struggling to find their roles right now.
- Scott County was happy to have Junior Terrin Hamilton back on the floor. Hamilton is still playing with a brace on his wrist after a fracture last month but had 14 points and 8 rebounds in their win over Johnson Central on Saurday.
- The auxiliary gym at Douglass had no air conditioning and the humidity was causing slips and falls so Lexington Christian chose to forfeit the rest of the weekend instead of risk injury.
- Scott County won the freshman division, narrowly edging Lexington Catholic for the title.
- George Rogers Clark beat Clinton County 48-32 to claim the JV tournament championship.
