Prospect Profile: Ben Gregg (2021 Columbia Christian HS/Rose City Rebels)
If you haven’t heard the name Ben Gregg before, well you’d better get used to hearing it. The still-growing 6-foot-8, 190-pound rising sophomore at Columbia Christian is one of the top players in the Class of 2021 – and in any class in the state of Oregon, period. Gregg started the AAU circuit this spring with the 15U squad of the Rose City Rebels, but spent some time up with the 17U team in the EYBL – and it appears he’ll be staying there the rest of this summer.
Gregg made his debut with the 17U team during Session 3 in Atlanta, where he averaged 4.8 points and 4.0 rebounds in the four games there. “It was a challenge – I was nervous at first, I’m not going to lie,” Gregg said. “But as I kept on playing I got used to it. The team was really good at helping me be part of them, so that was good.”
Gregg went back to the 15U team but rejoined the 17U squad at the Rose City Showcase, where he started to come into his own. A fluid athlete with a great feel for the game, he scored both inside and out, helping out on the boards and blocking shots from the weakside. Now playing with his school team in June, he continues to hone his craft. “I just need to keep working on my jumpshot, I’ve been struggling with that,” Gregg siad. “That and getting into the lane and attacking more.”
Now while it’s pretty clear that even as a rising sophomore that Gregg is a college prospect, it may be a little early to talk about college recruitment. But even at this stage there is a school that Gregg has set his eyes upon, and while he backs off on saying he’d commit to them if offered, there’s no question this program is on the top of his list.
“Gonzaga is my dream school,” Gregg said. “Spokane, that’s where I grew up and that’s where my family lives too. But I’m just looking for a D-I school that’s really competitive and will help my game grow.”
There will be plenty of time for Gregg to capture the attention of the Zags or any other school for that matter. For now, it’s about improvement and Gregg is working hard to do that. “I just want to keep getting better,” Gregg said. “So next year with my school team I’m able to compete at a high level.”
