Prospect Spotlight: Tre McCrary (2020)
An up-and-comer in Iowa’s class of rising juniors, Xavier point guard Tre McCrary is a guy that a lot of people might know about, yet.
He’s been playing in the same Xavier system as Matthew Mims, a South Dakota State commit and one of the state’s best point guards the last two seasons.
Now the rising junior will get his chance to play up with the varsity, and with his current set of skills, looks like a guy who could make a big impact with the Saints next season.
“I think my strongest area is my ball-handling. I like to make a move and attack the rim or pull up for a jump shot,” said McCrary, who played sophomore ball last year for the Saints, one of Iowa’s top hoops programs.
“My sophomore season with Xavier went very well. I scored the ball at the rate that I wanted and my team ended up with a decent record. Going into a well-established (varsity) program like Xavier, I hope to contribute in as many ways as possible, such as adding leadership and additional scoring power. I’m willing to accept any role as long as it benefits the team”
Ahead of what could be a breakout junior season, McCrary will be playing with the Iowa Mavs program for his 16U offseason.
“My spring playing with the Mavs has been pretty good so far. We do a good job of competing with some really good teams from around the Midwest,” said McCrary.
“My plans for the summer include finishing up the AAU season with the Mavs and preparing for the high school season. I plan on attending numerous college and exposure camps to increase my recruiting footprint. I also want to focus on improving my strength and my 3-point shot.”
With still plenty of time for his recruitment to materialize, McCrary says he’s not too focused on that right now. But he does have some initial interest coming in, from a wide-range of programs.
“It’s mainly at the D2, D3 level and even a D1. Right now, I’m just concentrating on being the best player and teammate that I can be,” said McCrary. “And I will let that (recruitment) play itself out.”
