Recap: Wisconsin Team Camp Day 1
MADISON — Pool play kicked off on day one of the Wisconsin team camp. Despite falling to La Crosse Central, Oshkosh West 2020 point guard Karter Thomas put up a heck of a fight on Friday…
Courtney Brown – 2019 – SF – Howard Pulley
He’s known as a high flyer, but Brown shot the ball really well in a victory over Sun Prairie. Using a quick jab step, Brown created just enough space on the perimeter to get his shot off. A good mid-major prospect, Brown has a nice upside as a slasher, perimeter threat, and defender. At 6-foot-6, 190-pounds, Brown’s overall athleticism allows him to impact the game in a variety of ways.
Jordan Davis – 2020 – SF – La Crosse Central
Davis came right from Wisconsin’s football camp, but didn’t show a ton of signs of fatigue in a win over Lakeville South (MN). The junior wing shot the ball well and connected on some difficult looks from mid and 3-point range. Davis didn’t need much space to work with and wasn’t fazed by a hand in his face. A two-sport star, Davis could end up playing basketball or football in college. He has offers on the hardwood from UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay, while Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin, and a handful of mid-majors are expressing interest.
Trejuan Holloman – 2022 – PG – Howard Pulley
It’s scary that this kid isn’t even a freshman in high school. Likely a blue chip prospect down the road, Holloman is well beyond his years. A pure point guard who can thrive as a scorer and facilitator, Holloman already has developed a killer instinct. What really stood out about Holloman is he’s capable of doing the little things you want from your floor general, but also has that special takeover ability. Holloman had some nasty drives to the rim, hanging and finishing in traffic. In the pick n’ roll, Holloman operated like a surgeon, picking apart the defense. Possessing above the rim ability, Holloman also showed off some advanced explosiveness for his age.
Karter Thomas – 2020 – PG – Oshkosh West
Wanted to see how Thomas would hold up in a high level matchup versus La Crosse Central and he exceeded expectations. Thomas scored a game-high 26 points against the state title contender, hitting 8 3-pointers. Thomas was excellent in the pick n’ roll. Able to come off the screen and let it fly or hit his big man rolling to the rim or popping out for a triple, Thomas made good decisions all game long. When the offense was stalling, Thomas had the ability to hit tough triples. While West didn’t have enough to hang with Central, it was Thomas who kept them around throughout the first half.
Tyler Wahl – 2019 – SF – Lakeville North (MN)
A cerebral, positionless talent, Wahl is the type of prospect that programs win big with. As always, Wahl did a little bit of everything in an easy victory over the Wisconsin Playmakers. He finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals. A toughness player with better than expected bounce, Wahl threw down a few dunks in traffic, catching defenders by surprise with his leaping ability. The outside shot is a work in progress, but Wahl can score in the half court either as a high post slasher or post up presence. Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa State appear to be in the best spot for Wahl. He recently visited the Gophers and Cyclones. He’ll unofficial to UW next week and take part in their advanced camp.
Rajai Williams – 2019 – PG – Sun Prairie
One of the many Sun Prairie prospects who could be in store for a breakout 2018-19 season, Williams had a strong effort in a high level matchup with Howard Pulley. With Jalen Johnson and Colin Schaefer not in action, Williams stepped up and carried the load as the team’s primary playmaker. Williams delivered some on the money assists, looking off defenders and generating easy buckets for his teammates. Williams also had his pull-up working, knocking down a few shots from beyond the arc.
