A Scout’s Take: St. John Bosco Summer League (Part 2)
A Scout’s Take: St. John Bosco Summer League (Part 2)
BELLFLOWER, CA—St. John Bosco High School was the place to be on Tuesday for one of the better summer leagues in So-Cal. There were few kids missing—most notably Jake Kyman and Max Agbonkpolo of Santa Margarita. However, this lets other players the opportunity to step even more—that being Shengzhe Li. Arguably the most dominant player we saw all night.
Most Improved
Vaughn Flowers (Rolling Hills Prep)
2019, 6-foot-1, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Flowers possesses that ideal college frame with long arms and broad shoulders. He has always been known as a college-level athlete, but the skills set wasn’t present. However, since the regular season it appears the perimeter skills are beginning to evolve. He handled pressure much more efficiently and his decision making was solid. A definite sleeper in the 2019 class.
Division 1 potential
Neil Owens (Loyola)
2019, 5-foot-10, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the more crafty point guards in So-Cal is Owens. He has a clever handle and his finishes in traffic show off his savvy for the game. He can knock in the 3-point shot and it’s consistent. He needs to be more vocal in terms of running the offense and continue to work on his burst, but he has definitely earned that “sleeper tag.”
Son of Adam
James Keefe (Loyola)
2019, PF, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: James is the son of former Stanford standout and NBA player Adam Keefe. James is a bouncy 4-man who has a potent elbow jump shot and overall touch around the basket. He runs well in transition and has the ball skills to run the break. He needs to get more consistent finishing through contact and utilizing with his left hand in the paint, but overall his progress has been solid.
Blossoming Senior
Courtland Moffit (Corona Centennial)
2019, SG, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: Moffit was one of the better two-way players at the SJB League. He has a wiry frame with good quickness and he exhibited these traits attacking off the dribble and playing in the passing lanes.
2022’s on the rise
Benny Gealer (Rolling Hills Prep)
2022, PG, 5-foot-9, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the first descriptions that come to mind when describing Gealer is “moxie.” The feisty point guard prospect with long arms and high basketball IQ are also part of the package. He knocked in some 3-point shots, handled the pressure with aplomb, and he handed out some nifty assists. His head is always up, changes speeds, and has a nice burst.
Jack McCloskey (Santa Margarita)
2022, SG, 6-foot-2, 150 pounds
Joel’s Take: After watching McCloskey in this league it appears his transition to varsity basketball should be seamless. He has a rangy frame, high basketball IQ, and knows how play in the half court set. In the open court he advances the ball and makes good decisions.
