KAMO Shootout: Stock Risers (Guards)
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Hosted by Shawnee Mission East, the annual KaMo Shootout has earned a reputation as one of the midwest’s premier summer events for high school teams.
This event tipped off on Friday and wrapped up on Sunday with championship brackets being played. Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the events top performers.
25-Joe Berry, 6’3, SF, Topeka Washburn Rural (Kan.)
Berry can make things happen offensively. He has a good eye for plays and is good at reading a defense. He likes to collect himself before driving, then puts his shoulder down and crashes the basket. Berry is also needed on the other side of the floor. He moves his feet well and can make life difficult as guards work their way inside.
13-David Brown Jr., G, Blue Valley West (Kan.)
A talented guard who plays both ends of the floor. Brown Jr. brings a good combination of speed and strength to the floor which translates to fast break looks, extra passes and physical play in the paint. He’s also very good at mixing it up with taller players and coming away with boards. He also plays physical defense and can get in the head of opponents.
10-Sam Carroll, 5’10, PG, Olathe East (Kan.)
A defensive-minded guard who can hold his own against opposing team’s top playmaker. He likes to play close and keeps his hands up and in their face. He’s also a talented offensive player. He can slip to the basket, pass off on the drive and knock down shots from behind the line.
20-Armon Downing, G, 2019, Topeka Washburn Rural (Kan.)
Downing is an intelligent guard who makes his teammates around him better. He swings the ball and can create shots for nearly anyone on the floor. He’s always looking for the open man as a pass-first player. He also has impressive handles and can find enough space to get his shot off in traffic. Downing can be difficult to stop when his fade if falling.
12-Savian Edwards, G, 2019, Topeka Washburn Rural (Kan.)
Edwards is a flashy point who is always ready to get his hands on the ball and make something happen. He has a slipperiness to his game that allows him to sneak by defenders and to the basket. He also is electric on defense. He fights for the ball and can tip away passes and kick off fast breaks.
