Prospect Spotlight: Grant Cooney (2019)
A big man who excels on the football field, Topeka West 2019 big man Grant Cooney is establishing himself as one of Kansas’ premier rising senior bigs this offseason.
Also a football standout who is drawing college interest from several Division I programs, Cooney is a 6’6, 235-pound post player with a diverse skill set.
“I’m a big man who can also shoot,” Cooney says. “I also rebound well and block shots, can also pick and roll pretty well or pick and pop.”
Cooney transferred to Topeka West after winning a Class 5A state championship at Shawnee Heights his sophomore year. He missed his junior year however due to a broken wrist.
Cooney is competing with and putting together a strong spring with SSA Elite, one of Kansas’ premier grassroots programs.
“I’ve been playing with those guys since I got on the team after my freshman year,” Cooney says. “They’ve done well at teaching me to play with a high motor and contribute in other ways than scoring.”
After missing some time due to an injury, Cooney says he is working on his all around game this offseason as he gears up for his senior year.
“This off-season i am working on becoming a more consistent shooter along with regaining my touch with the ball and around the rim,” Cooney says.
