Prospect Spotlight: Tyler Andrews (2020)
Plenty of Iowa high school hoopers will have breakout seasons next winter, and new Cedar Rapids Kennedy guard Tyler Andrews is likely to be one of them.
The 6-foot-4 rising junior spent his first two high school seasons at Linn-Mar, but transferred into Kennedy at the end of his sophomore year. He’ll be eligible to play with the Cougars right away next season.
The long and athletic prospect predicates his game on athleticism, and has a developing skill-set to pair. He can get up and slam as easily as he’ll can a 3-ball.
After not playing with the Lions’ varsity at all as a sophomore, he’s now hoping to make a major impact with the Kennedy varsity next season.
“I’m liking the coaching staff at Kennedy a ton, they are super supportive as far as player development. And I’m getting used to playing with my new teammates well,” said Andrews.
“From what coach has told me, I will play the one and the two (next season), but he wants me to also post up smaller guards because I will play that position.”
This spring, Andrews has been playing with Gain Elite out of Minnesota, for coach Jonathan Williams. He’ll continue to hone his skill-set with that squad while also competing with Kennedy in high school team camps.
Still unproven at the varsity level, that doesn’t mean Andrews hasn’t been tremendous on the camp circuit.
He’s already started to generate some interest from Midwestern D1 and D2 programs. And ultimately, Andrews would like to use hoops as an avenue to his ultimate goal of becoming a doctor.
“A few schools have invited me to their camps; South Dakota, North Dakota State, UNI, and Wayne State,” said Andrews.
“My goal is to ultimately become a doctor, so I would want to go to a school where I could do that. My dream schools are Oregon and Cal Berkeley, where my uncle coaches.”
