Prospect Intro: Cion Townsend (2020)
Cion Townsend is the most talented player in Lexington that you’ve probably never heard of. Fresh off of sitting out his sophomore season after transferring from East Jessamine to Tates Creek, Townsend is ready to get on the floor for the Commodores and start establishing his name as a top floor general in the Junior class. As a freshman at East Jessamine, Cion saw the floor in 24 varsity games and averaged a little over 3 points per game for the Jaguars. So far this AAU season, Townsend is putting up much better numbers than that.
Cion is a self described pass-first point guard whose strengths are “going to the basket, passing the ball and getting my teammates open shots.” In my few times seeing Townsend play, he has also shown himself to be an excellent finisher around the rim with very good body control even when absorbing contact. After missing his Sophomore season due what was described as a paperwork problem, Cion has been thriving as the point guard for KY Pressure 16u. At this point, Townsend says they are having a strong season, “Our season is going good . We’re starting to work as a team now. We’re 20-7 I think and we just won the silver bracket in our last tournament in Louisville.”
Townsend’s biggest opponent could very well be himself. He has a knack for showing a bad attitude at the worst times and tends to talk trash to everyone in the gym, including the parents. Cion says that he is working on that temper as well as working together with his teammates and getting them focused on their common goals. One thing that Townsend made very clear is that his biggest individual goal for the 2018-19 season is “to be the best point guard in the city”. To accomplish that, he will need to outplay guys like Keaston Brown, Ben Johnson, Amirion Joyce, Evan Dreux, Isaiah Allen and others. If Cion can keep his head on straight and let his game speak, he is going to have the chance to prove that he is better than all those mentioned before and establish his name among the top point guards in the state in the 2020 class.
