Prospect Spotlight: Cody Tanneberg (2019)
Sumner guard Cody Tanneberg has been spending his offseason working out with trainers, trying to improve his speed, athletic, quickness and explosiveness with some in his hometown.
The 6-foot-1 guard is hoping to come into his senior season stronger than ever.
He’ll be adding his upgraded physical skills to his existing mental ones.
“I feel like that I’m a very unselfish guard. I like to play with a high IQ, I love to spread the ball and set up my teammates and make my team better that way,” said Tanneberg.
“I’m a very good rebounding guard, I like to crash the glass. And I’m confident in my outside shot, that’s something I’m good at.”
As a junior with Sumner, Tanneberg was a leader on the team. He says his role was to do whatever he needed to help the team win.
“We had a very solid season, we made it to the district playoffs. My role was a leadership one. I was playing both point guard and shooting guard and just did what I needed to help us win games,” said Tanneberg.
With the high school summer season ahead, Tanneberg has a chance to display his new and improved abilities. After that, he’s says AAU might be in the cards.
“Hopefully, after summer ball with my high school team I’ll look to play with an AAU team this summer,” said Tanneberg.
The 17U offseason is a big time for recruitment, players often get looked at and talked to by coaches who attend the AAU tournaments.
So far, it’s been Pacific that has shown Tanneberg some interest. He’s been to a Pacific game and has met their coaches. He’s been reaching out to other schools via email. But the recruitment has been light so far.
Still, even after the heavy recruitment months of the summer, Tanneberg has an ever-important senior season with the Spartans where he’ll be able to showcase himself.
“We have our whole starting five coming back next season, so I’m super excited. We have a lot of guys who can do a lot of different things,” said Tanneberg. “My role is going to be a big-time leader, making sure everyone gets involved, and making the game easier for everyone else.”
