Magic Memorial Day Festival: (Stock Raisers)
ORANGE, CA—The Magic Memorial Day Festival, hosted by Compton Magic, was the place to be in Southern California as there was a bevy of quality teams and players—most of which were from the So-Cal region. However, there were a few quality programs out of the region—most notably Nor Cal based Team Lillard as well as the Las Vegas Knicks.
After four grueling days Compton Magic (17u), Dream Vision (16u), and Team Lillard (15u) took home the hardware in their respective divisions.
Kyle Owens (Crespi) Club: Pump N Run 17U
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: It could be argued that Owens has been Pump N Run’s most consistent player. He affects the game in a multitude of areas including rebounding, passing, and defense. He plays at a great pace, can deliver the high IQ assist, and he possesses sneaky toughness. One of the areas that has shown great improvement has been his outside touch. In a nutshell, this kid is a basketball player.
Miles Jones (Radford/VA) Club: Team Winston
2019, PF/WF, 6-foot-5, 205 pounds
Joel’s Take: Jones is an active 4-man with good length (long arms) and soft hands. He is a rim runner who can finish with consistency going over or through contact. If the lane isn’t there for the finish he shows his savvy by delivering some nifty passes on the break. The athleticism and length are evident and he showed some ball skills as well.
Owen McCormack (Mocksville, NC/Davie) Club: Team Winston
2019, PF, 6-foot-6, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: McCormack is a face-up 4-man with a strong frame and a textbook jump shot. He steps into his shot off the break with precision and balance. His release is smooth and tight, especially off the catch. He is a productive rebounder at both ends and his basketball IQ is exhibited by his passing in the half court set.
Cade Potter (Orange Lutheran) Club: So-Cal All Stars
PF, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: The pick and pop 4-man has added some good weight and as a result has become a more productive player. He excels in the half court set as a spot up shooter, but he does have the necessary strength and improved bounce to finish over and through length.
Isaiah Johnson (Crean Lutheran) Club: Dream Vision 16U
2020, PF, 6-foot-6, 200 pounds
Joel’s Take: Johnson continues to emerge this spring with his continued improvement. The ultra-active prospect reminds us of former Duke/Cal standout Jamal Boykin. Johnson always gives 100 % at both ends and is a factor at both ends due to his length, hands, and motor. He gets most of his points attacking the offensive glass and finishing on the break. He can knock in the elbow jump shot and it appears he may end up at St. John Bosco or Bishop Montgomery during his junior campaign.
