Magic Memorial Day Festival (Top Sleepers)
ORANGE, CA—The Magic Memorial Day Festival, hosted by Compton Magic, was the place to be in Southern California as there was a bevy of quality teams and players—most of which were from the So-Cal region. However, there were a few quality programs out of the region—most notably Nor Cal based Team Lillard as well as the Las Vegas Knicks.
After four grueling days Compton Magic (17u), Dream Vision (16u), and Team Lillard (15u) took home the hardware in their respective divisions.
Gordon Boykins (St. Anthony) Club: Pump N Run 16U
2020, SG, 6-foot-1, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Boykins is strong left-handed wing-type who affects the game in multiple ways. Despite his size he is a physical rebounder and finisher. He is best described as a glue-type that can score at all three levels. His jump shot needs polishing to take his stock to another level, but overall he is a solid all-around player with a ton of moxie.
Xavier Dusell (Chaparral/AZ) Club: Team Harden 16U
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: Dusell has ideal size for the next level with good length. He is an exceptional shooter, especially off the catch. He excels in transition where he navigates through traffic for finishes. He plays the game at a good pace and rarely forces the issue. The tools are there to be a Division 1 player someday if of course his game (mid-range skills) continue to evolve.
Roland Banks Jr. (Bakersfield) Club: Gamepoint 17U
2019, PG, 6-foot-2, 175 pounds
Joel’s Take: Banks Jr. is a physical point guard who shows a nice burst off the dribble, a tight crossover, and excellent vision. He advances the ball well in transition and snaps passes to open teammates in the half court set. While attacking the basket he also has the strength to finish through contact. Definite sleeper to watch this summer.
Coree Joseph (Diamond Ranch) Club: Cali Rebels 17U
2019, PG, 5-foot-10, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Joseph is slight of built, but he gets to where he needs to go on the court. Due to his IQ and savvy he can run a team at the next level. He changes speeds very well, always has his head up, and his decision making is tight. He can knock in the 3-point shot as well, but going forward he needs to get stronger while attacking physical defenders.
Luke Barrett (Piedmont) Club: Lakeshow 16U
2020, SG, 6-foot-4, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: The willowy Barrett stood out at this event due to his shot making ability. He can weave his way to the rim (excellent body control) or pull-up and nail the jump shot. His touch is smooth out to the 3-point shot and his pull-up game is tight. He plays with assertiveness and exhibits a nice feel for the game—rarely forces the issue.
