Starting for Red River was Carson Dennis, Braedan Hanson, Karter Rowekamp, Tanner Soleim, and Paul Miller….Starting for Shanley is Jake Reinholz, Cam Saville, Shayne Dauenhauer, Kaleb Christman, and Jake Kava…
This is a game that had little flow. Constant whistles for everything you can think of. A combined 66 free throws were attempted with Shanley putting up 41 of them. Shanley was also the team that had an easier team getting into an offensive rhythm. Their halfcourt offense had a lot more ball reversals, off-ball movement, and it’s evident that each player has a role and is comfortable in their role.
With Red River, I never could get a feel for what was going on. They seemed to have a new line-up on the floor all the time, different players bringing the ball up the floor but you didn’t know if you were getting a quick attack or if it was going to be one pass and chuck. Red River seemed to have no rhythm offensively and even less communication on the defensive end (Shanley took advantage of space off screens and bad rotations constantly).
As far as the box scores go, tough to count on them as Mizero had a memorable eight and was recorded with four, a couple others had double their outputs, but we do know that Reinholz was the leading scorer joined by Saville and Kava in double figures. Braedan Hanson had a game high 21 points.
Grand Forks Red River
Braedan Hanson. Playing lead guard for Red River despite being the tallest guy on the floor. This is just another sigh of his versatility and potential. A big reason he is the highest rated college prospect in the state…Another reason he’s highly rated is Braedan can hit shots with feet set. Against the zone he moved to open areas to catch and hit and we saw examples of makes early…When he gets to SMSU the coaches are going to see his attack middle, love it, and then work with the jumpstop to hit mid-lane or talk about another dribble to finish at the rim. Hanson does a really good job attacking a rotating defense and getting middle and as he grows as a player the percentages of those middle attacks will go up…
Love how Braeden moves the ball around the perimeter to create shots for teammates against a rotating defense that can’t keep up…Had a couple fantastic passes to teammates around the hoop that were simply missed because the teammate wasn’t expecting them. That won’t be an issue at the college level…Around the start of the second quarter Hanson worked over a screen, cut off the angle, used quick hands to get a steal, pushed the other way for a two hand dunk. Used excellent defense to create highlight offense…Seemed to be at the foul line every third possession in the second half…
Carson Dennis. Has court IQ. Very good passer and you can trust him on the wing with a couple dribbles to utilize. Uses the dribble to get into space to move the defense more than he does to beat the defense on the attack…Carson moves off the ball extremely well. Takes advantage of sleepy defenders to get to space and get results…Laterally he moves his feet better than I thought against smaller guards. Forced some turnovers beating guys to the spot and causing players frustration…
Played in the high post of the zone and loved how he was active, took steps to the ball to get an angle, received, faced, and attacked two guys controlling his body between for a difficult make….Dennis is an all around player that can really help you do whatever you ask. Gets a lot out of his frame…Was moved over, play some lead guard at times…Definitely one off the better off ball scorers in the state. Does a great job getting to space to catch and attempt…
Austin Slaughter. Came off the bench and stepped into the lead ball handler role…Coast to coast dribble attack weaving through traffic and finishing at the rim was completed before many of the Shanley defenders were able to retreat, turn, and locate. Austin has a different pace to him in transition plus showed the control to finish at top speed…Was in foul trouble early for putting his hands on Saville on defense instead of moving feet to the spot…The guy can make plays that others can’t. Like his reverse lay-up early in the second half when his direct line was cut so he went to the opposite side with one dribble and an extension….
Does a nice job getting into space for attempts, just has to keep working on completion and that field goal percentage will go up. Looks to me like a slashing three man at the next level with the building skill to play a couple spots. Still has to get more comfortable attacking in traffic. I’d love to see him be able to regularly go to and hit that 14 foot pull-up off one dribble in the future as it was be tough to guard…
Like how he shuffled his feet to get to the baseline help and then stood in and took a charge from a 6-foot-4 opponent. Positioning was there and he didn’t bail on the contact…So many flashes of brilliance, like the steal into a spin move lay-up in transition….Minutes were a bit limited as he is just returned from an injury…
Jordan Polynice. Long, lanky 6-foot-5 sophomore with good skill. Still needs some experience but the potential is obvious. Can handle, moves smoothly with the ball, nice touch and as his halfcourt buzzer beater showed, he has some range to him too.
Fargo Shanley
Cam Saville. A sophomore playing lead guard for Shanley, Cam is a good sized kid at 6-foot-4 and early in the game his attack middle gave the Deacons the lead. Like his vision reading the defense and then using a nice first step to hit the gap…Cam used several different ways to get past the initial defender. We saw a ball fake left into the attack right, we saw a jab step into an opposite attack, and there was a crossover to get into space.
Used a Euro-step in the open floor combined with an over the top rip-through on the break to score. Beautiful combination to beat an undisciplined defender going for the steal…Love his pace push. His rapid attack up the floor gives him a chance to attack the rim quickly, but more often allows for a quick outlet to start the offense before the defense can locate and get in position…Good rebounder for a guard it seems based on his quick locating of the ball and his fight to secure…
Gets to either side of the rim consistently off the bounce, will be even better when he can finish with either hand around the rim…In the second half a ball screen was coming his way but Cam saw his defender lean into the ball screen taking away his balance so Saville went away from the screen attacking baseline for a basket. Excellent recognition…
Kevin Wolfe. A six foot four/five that simply knows how to play. Great at getting into space which is how he is able to put points on the board. Also shows the ability to displace opponents with his low base and then secure the board….Moves well without the ball to get to space to finish plays after teammates create the opportunity…Makes a box-out hit physically every time. Every time…Has a good left shoulder turn into a release in the post which can work because he releases after making contact to the mid-section of his defender…
Jake Kava. Sophomore wing that also started along with Saville and they will make a great pair for the next three years…The one dribble pull-up from 18 feet on the right side looked outstanding. Fantastic touch and good rhythm moving from the dribble into the squared up shot in the air. Not much a guy can do to defend that once he gets a dribble into space because of good lift on the shot and the size getting a clean look…Really good rebounder for a small forward. Pulled balls out of packs to start quick transitions and he has the fight in him to chase down all loose balls. Leaves nothing to others, works to get things done himself…With feet set the touch looks pure as well. This is a guy that rotating defenses or returning defenders need to have a better feel for…
Bruce Mizero. The senior gave his team a lift off the bench hitting a wide open three and then came down the next possession, fought for good position on the block, received a pass, was fouled, hit both foul shots. Big five points in 15 seconds from him…Rebounded some, moved over to get in position to contest shots deep, thought he did a nice job off the bench…Hit another momentum building three early in the fourth quarter…
Jake Reinholz. Like the touch of the 6-foot-3 junior shooting guard. With feet set, releasing straight up with good lift, he’s going to make a solid percentage of his attempts…The Rough Riders were not very good helping one pass away and Jake took advantage a couple times. Used a step to help get the corner and then physically worked his way to get the ball to the rim against an out of position defense. Good recognition…Uses a ball screen well curling tight to close off his man and then set his feet to make a play before the help or could support. Quality form and touch that is going to hit 50 plus percent when left open… Knocked out several foul shots to put the game away
