Capitol Hoops Summer League 5/31 Notebook
HYATTSVILLE, MD — We were in the gym for the opening night of the Capitol Hoops Summer League, and several players stood out. Here we unload our first notebook from the event featuring evaluations on many of the uncommitted prospects we saw.
Game 1: DC Evolution vs. Bowie
DC Evolution
6’0 CG Carlos Dunn | Class of 2019
Glue guy. Rebounds well for a guard. Demonstrates toughness. Limited in terms of size and athleticism. Good shooter from the catch, but has to speed up his release.
6’3 CG Jay Heath | Class of 2019
Shot has really improved. Looks confident and compact. Will make extra pass. Gives max effort at all times while on the court.
6’5 SG Dimingus Stevens | Class of 2020
Volume shooter. Must become a more consistent finisher through contact.
Bowie
6’5 F Bobby Carson | Class of 2019
Uses length to block and alter a lot of shots. Versatile defensively. Moves well laterally. Crafty with the ball. Can finish from odd angles. Ball handling good but not great. Anticipates passing lanes well. Slasher.
6’2 SG Kyree Freeman Davis | Class of 2020
Aggressive scorer. Comfortable in the middle areas of the floor. Seeks contact. Communicates on defense. High motor. Has 3 point range.
Game 2: Greenbelt (Eleanor Roosevelt) vs. St. Mary’s Ryken
Greenbelt
6’5 SF Cameron Brown | Class of 2019
Made 3 of 4 from three point range. Shot looks improved. Continues to mature both physically and mentally. Ball handling still needs some work, but he has improved in that area as well. Love his unselfishness and defensive potential.
6’4 F Isaiah Gross | Class of 2019
Flat out work horse. Crafty finisher around the basket who seeks contact.
St. Mary’s Ryken
6’2 CG | Jules Bikoy | Class of 2020
Excellent athlete. Plays fast, but needs to learn how to change speeds sometimes. Can make shots, but needs to continue to work to become a knock down shooter.
6’4 SF Louis Tang | Class of 2019
Super energetic. Will pick up full court. Skill set is improving. Demonstrates good fundamentals and a high IQ. Needs to continue to work on the consistency with his perimeter jump shot.
Game 3: Bishop O’Connell vs. Good Counsel
Bishop O’Connell
6’9 PF Jake Berry | Class of 2020
Showed that he has good timing and is athletic enough to adequately protect the rim at a high level. Lefty. Stretches the floor from three point land.
6’0 PG Brayon Freeman | Class of 2021
Super skilled and very crafty with the ball. Getting stronger. Finishes through contact. Getting others involved more consistently. Plus defender. Stays active.
6’6 SF TJ Gadsden | Class of 2020
Super active defensively. Mobile and versatile. Pulled down 10 boards. Decent rim protector. Skill set is still improving, but his potential is clearly tremendous.
6’4 SG Wes Peterson Jr. | Class of 2021
Becoming more athletic and coordinated. Stays engaged while on the bench. Makes eye contact with coach when being addressed. Very coachable. Love his potential moving forward.
5’10 PG Ayan Teel | Class of 2019
Elite ball handler with a lot of quickness. Creative around the basket. Has a nice middle game, but can also hit consistently from deep. Facilitates the offense. Not a liability on defense.
6’8 PF Charlie Weber | Class of 2019
Very good athlete. Plays with a high motor. Has nice touch from mid range. Made a three from the corner which looked good as it hit all net. Becoming more confident and aggressive.
Good Counsel
6’5 F Phillip Carter | Class of 2020
Versatile defensively. Can protect the paint. Still improving. Best basketball is ahead of him.
6’2 SG Bez Mbeng | Class of 2021
Made both of his three point attempts, and went two of two from the line as well. Played hard. Racked up deflections.
6’2 CG Bryce Walker | Class of 2020
Plus athlete. Good shot blocker for a guard. Likes to attack the basket. Strong. Hit one of two from long range.
Game 4: Springbrook vs. Oxon Hill
Springbrook
6’2 PG Timitrius Hawkins | Class of 2019
Slender, but strong and athletic. Plays with good pace. Does a bit of everything, which includes scoring, rebounding, and getting his teammates involved. Plus defender.
