Stock Risers: 2020
As we enter the high school summer league month in June there are a few incoming juniors that have improved their stock over the spring. Most of these players were varsity players at their high schools as sophomores and are now looking to take their game to the next level as they enter a more demanding role. The class of 2020 is a pretty deep class in Northern California but here are a few names that most coaches and scouts may not know about that have improved their stock.
Dayton Magana – PG 5’7 Central Catholic HS
Magana is a true floor general and makes his teammates better. He was one game away from leading his team to a state championship game as the team’s starting point guard as a sophomore. Expect a big junior season from Magana with Central Catholic as he looks to score more and become the team’s leader. He is an excellent defender, has the ability to penetrate and dish, and is very vocal on the court.
Devin Johnson – PG 5’10 Vallejo HS
Johnson is a solid two sport athlete that runs the floor well and can penetrate the paint. He is also an underrated defender and has improved his shooting from the outside. As Vallejo High School enters a new league, there are a high expectations for them to return the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and Johnson will be a huge part of that run.
Imani Lopez – SG 6’3 Vintage HS
Lopez is one of the most underrated athletes in his class in Northern California. He attacks the rim well, he plays great on-ball defense, and he moves well without the ball. Lopez will need to improve his outside shooting if he wants to take his game to an elite level but he is certainly somebody to keep an eye on out of the 2020 class.
Liam Mcdevitt – PG 6’1 Justin-Siena HS
McDevitt will have a much bigger role this year for Justin-Siena High School this year with Senior forward Cole Cummings taking off for college. Justin-Siena was able to get a great win at the end of the season at home against Tamalpais High School that left the school with hope for its basketball program. McDevitt who has been a varsity player since his freshman year, will be asked to become more of a leader and take on more of the offensive load. His development this spring will make this upcoming season interesting.
