Show Me Showdown: 2020 Evals Pt 1
PrepHoopsIllinois covered the Show Me Showdown over the weekend in St. Louis. Time to breakdown the prospects from the Land of Lincoln in the last event of the spring. Here is part one of our evaluations of the 2020 prospects at the event!
SG Caleb Zurliene (Illinois Bears)
Zurliene also played up on the 17U level as well as with his usual 16U squad. This Breese Mater Dei guard has size for position and should continue to grow. You have to love this kids ability to shoot it from three. Picture perfect shot fundamentally off the catch from deep. He hit several clutch threes throughout the event. A lot of helium heading into June with his high school team. Midwest D2’s need to take notice.
F Terry Pelczynski (Illinois Bears)
This Nashville 6’5” combo forward played up on the 17U level in his most impressive game of the weekend. The 2020 forward flashed when we saw him drop 32 points in a JV game against Duquoin in the regular season. Showed more of that. He has broad shoulders and excellent upper body strength. Has some toughness on the boards and can shoot the ball. Connected on a couple threes and another shot fake that he finished with a mid-range jumper. Projects as a small college combo forward.
SF Daulton Burgner (Illinois Bears)
Burner played on both the 16U squad and up some filling in on the second 17U team. He is a 6’4” wing from Belleville Althoff that has put himself on our radar with his play this spring. Like the projectability in his game. Makes some difficult shots in the lane. Once he adds more strength he will be able to finish more consistently. Sound mid-range jumper. Would like to see it become more consistent from three. Needs to improve at the free throw line. Nice passing for a wing. Small college player right now.
PF Reese Martin (Illinois Bears)
Martin is a 6’4” post from Breese Mater Dei High School. Plays physical in the paint and was efficient with his touches around the basket. Martin is a D3 or NAIA player.
PG Jacob Schadegg (Illinois Bears)
Shadegg is a tough as nails 5’10” point guard. He is more than willing to throw his body around to make a play diving after loose balls and being a pest to the other team. Love his competitiveness. He is a flashy passer that dishes it with flair and can hit an open three. Small college prospect.
G Luke Ervie (Illinois Bears)
Ervie is a player that we see quite a bit during the high school season at Freeburg. Saturday playing up on the 17U level for the Bears the 2020 combo guard put in his best effort of the spring. Not an overly explosive player he knows how to use angles, is crafty in the lane, and plays tough as nails. He made a lot of gritty plays in the lane rebounding well from his guard position. Passed it setting up his shooters. Finished around the hoop and hit a few jumpers. Small college player with D2 upside.
PG Blake McKay (Illinois Bears)
McKay is a point guard from Woodlawn that has broad shoulders and likes to get in the lane where he can find his teammates with his creative passing. Also is a solid shooter especially from mid-range. D3/NAIA gem at the guard spot.
SG Race Rynski (Illinois Bears)
This Woodlawn 6’0” two guard struggled early shooting the ball, but then got it going as the game went along. Drilled several triples off the catch. Slow release on shot. At his height if he could show some PG skills that would help his college value. Small college player.
G Carlos Keen (Illinois Bears)
Keen is a 5’9” guard from Sparta that is tough. Rebounds well for his height fighting against bigger defenders inside. The tiny lefty is a small college player.
PG Grant Goebel (Illinois Bears)
This 5’8” Breese Mater Dei point guard is a tough and competitive kid. He can hit an occasional shot when left open and plays within a team concept. Small college prospect.
F Gabe Mason (DiverseCity)
Mason is a 2020 6’5” forward from Metamora. He was the go to player for DiverseCity 16U in the game we saw. Could grow a few more inches which would make him even more intriguing as a face up four man. Mason is best spacing the floor as seen by drilling several three point shots. Also is a decent rebounder that will improve even more with that once he adds strength. Small college player.
