Prospect Update: Trey Hutcheson (2019)
With a lethal jumper, some serious length and skill-set that’s morphed from power forward to bonafide wing, it’s no wonder Linn-Mar rising senior Trey Hutcheson is starting to rack up offers.
Air Force is the latest school to offer the rangy 6-foot-5 wing — Iowa’s 4th-rankled 2019 — and he’s been working hard to improve his perimeter skill-set. Last weekend at Kings of the Court, it looked like he was all the way there.
“Since last year my ball handling has gotten a lot better, and I’m way more comfortable playing perimeter. I’ve really proved that I’m a three (wing) rather than a power forward,” said Hutcheson. “I’ve also really improved my pull-up game from mid-range and 3-point.”
As a junior with the Lions, Hutcheson helped his team to a 13-win season while averaging 18.7 points per game on some high shooting clips of 47/43/87.
“I really enjoyed my junior year, I had a couple tough games but I thought other than those I had a really good year, obviously capping it off with a great game vs. Muscatine. Next year, I’ll take on an even bigger role as a scorer and a leader,” he said.
Ahead of his senior season, Hutcheson is spending his 17U offseason with Martin Brothers. A change of pace from playing on the adidas Gauntlet with the Barnstormers last summer.
“Martin Brothers has been good so far. I really enjoy the guys and the coaches, the transition has gone pretty smooth,” said Hutcheson.
“This summer, I’m really excited for our New York City tournament, but also for taking a couple college visits and trying to make it to some elite camps to meet coaches and schools and get myself out there.”
In addition to the Air Force offer, Hutcheson has North Dakota and Truman State offers. Drake offered him last spring, but its coach, Niko Medved, has since left for Colorado State.
“I’m really not sure about the Drake offer, the assistant coach (Matt) Woodley came to watch my workout like two months ago and told me he was impressed, and they watched me play a lot during April but they haven’t specifically said whether the offer stands or not,” said Hutcheson.
Other schools in the mix right now: “Belmont is really interested, UNI is in the mix, Minnesota State-St. Cloud, Western Illinois, Denver, Furman, NW Missouri State and Upper Iowa. UW-Milwaukee and Princeton, too,” said Hutcheson.
It’ll be a big summer ahead for the D1 prospect, and he could be the next Iowa guy to blow up during the three July live periods. And at any time, we could expect Hutcheson to make a decision. But he has no set timetable.
“My goals are to get to some camps and create some really good relationships with coaches and programs, and hopefully have some great fitting offers to choose from,” he said.
“I don’t have a timeline, I’d like to commit by the fall, probably, but if I don’t feel like something fits right then I have no issue pushing it back; and I have no issue committing early if I think it’s right”
