Recruiting Report: Trey Wiest (2019)
Trey Wiest is coming off an excellent weekend at the ECI Spring Preview. It’s the most recent accomplishment for the six foot guard from Mandan.
Mandan went 22-5 this year with a solid squad and Wiest was a near double figure scorer with the team’s second highest assist total and he was the fourth leading rebounder. It was a good year for Trey and Mandan.
“Overall, we had a good season by placing 3rd in the Class A State Tournament and finished 22-5 on the season,” Trey said. “We really wanted to play in the championship game, but fell short against eventual champion Bismarck Century in the semi-finals. I felt I took some major steps forward as the point guard and contributed to the team’s success in a number of ways.
“My main focus each night was taking care of the ball, running the offense efficiently and making good decisions with the ball along with being a strong defender. Having a number of scorers on our team, I took pride in playing my role, but I also knew on certain nights I had to be a scoring threat to help the Braves win. I am excited about expanding my leadership & scoring role on the team this upcoming season.”
The Attack didn’t have the weekend they were hoping for but Wiest did play really well against the best players in the state.
“The season’s going well and I’m having a lot of fun playing on the Attack team,” Wiest said. “We’ve played in (four) quality tournaments so far and have a 10-8 record. Each tournament our team continues to gel as we get to know each other on and off the court. We have a number of strong players on the team. I really enjoy the team and look forward to the remaining tournaments.
“We want to continue to improve and be competitive in every tournament. Each tournament provides great competition for us. We want to play hard, have fun and win as many games as we can.”
With the Stecklers and others moving on to college Wiest will have to shoulder more load for Mandan next year.
“I’m really focusing on being a more consistent perimeter shooter and working on my shot off the dribble,” Trey said. “My goal each day is to make 250 shots. This summer I have to be more aggressive on offense and look for my shot more as my role will change this season as I’ll be expected to score more.
“Along with my individual work, I’ve been attending our North Dakota Attack workout sessions along with I’m Possible Training with Mark Kinnebrew. I will also attend a few Elite Camps in North and South Dakota. I’ve been attending the Sanford Power Training Program since our season ended to continue to get stronger and quicker. My goal is to do whatever I can to help the Braves make a return trip to the State Tournament.”
Wiest still has to finish things on a good note with the Attack. Then of course a senior year of basketball, followed by a college basketball. But where?
“I definitely want to play college basketball,” Wiest said. “I’ve had contact from some NCAA Division III schools, Dakota Wesleyan, U of Mary, Valley City State University, Concordia University-Nebraska, Bismarck State College, and University of Jamestown.”
