KC Classic: Top Prospects
KC Classic: Top Prospects
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The final day of the Kansas City Classic in Lawrence, Kan. on Sunday featured several players putting together solid performances. Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several of the top prospects at the event.
Jamonta Black, 6’4, G, 2019, Rock Bridge, Missouri Team Carroll
Black, who recently committed to play at Missouri State, can get a step on any opponent that guards him. His handles are difficult to get a hand on when he goes isolation and can take it anywhere on the floor he wishes. He is money with the ball, capable of scoring around the rim, around the free throw line and from deep. Black also plays extremely tough defense on the perimeter.
Tyem Freeman, 6’6, F, 2019, Parkview, Missouri Team Carroll
Easily one of the top dunkers at the event, Freeman is always looking to pick off a pass and take it for an easy two. He has tremendous athleticism, a player who has no problem dunking over opponents that are attempting to protect the rim. Freeman is also a solid ball handler and a smooth shooter from behind the line. He can find buckets whenever he feels like it – the only question is whether or not he will be shooting the extra free throw.
Jonathan Jackson, 6’4, G, 2020, Maranatha Christian, MoKan Elite
Jackson was easily the best shooter we saw throughout the weekend, showcasing a smooth release and the ability to repeat his shooting motion with consistency. He is potentially a high level player going forward with good size, athleticism and a defined skill set.
Zane Meeks, 6’8, F, 2019, Shawnee Mission Northwest (Kan.), Team Rush
Meeks continued to add to an impressive list of offers recently as he added Air Force and Furman. He is a prototypical stretch 4 who can get on the boards and hold his own defensive in the post and at the offensive end has a quick, smooth release from beyond the 3-point arc.
Jaylon McDaniel, 6’8, F, 2021, Blue Springs (Mo.), MoKan Elite 15U
One of the better big men prospects in the 2021 class in the midwest, McDaniel brings length, athleticism and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the floor. He is a good shot blocker, and is capable of moving his feet laterally on the perimeter as well. He is definitely a player to watch in the upcoming years.
Mike Peake, 6’7, F, 2020, KC Northeast (Mo.), MoKan Elite 16U
Peake is among the most improved players we’ve seen this spring taking his game to new heights after a solid season at KC Northeast. He mostly played inside for Northeast, but he has a well-rounded game with the ability to shoot the ball from the perimeter, can handle the ball and get all the way to the basket off the bounce. Around the rim, he is a slam dunk waiting to happen, able to punish the rim with emphatic slams. He’s definitely a player to watch this offseason and will likely enter his junior season as one of the state’s premier prospects.
