2018 Prep Hoops Oklahoma State Tournament: Top 16U Guards from Day 1
The first day of the 2018 Prep Hoops Oklahoma State Tournament was filled with competitive games and skilled guard play. Here are some of the top guard standouts from Day 1.
Isaiah Lancaster 2020 Ok Respect 16U
Lancaster is about 5’8 on a good day but he dominated the paint Friday night. No player created more layup opportunities for themselves than Lancaster. He used his elite quickness to change directions and find angles to the rim.
He has the unique ability as a small guard to get in the lane and contort his body in whatever way gets him a clear angle to score. His ability to finish for an undersized guard reminds me of another current point guard named Isaiah.
The Respect have a good depth at the guard position but Lancaster could not be stopped and he is a name to keep any eye on throughout the tournament.
BJ Jefferson 2020 BTR
Jefferson is an intriguing Wing with BTR. The strength of Jefferson on the Wing coupled with his great athleticism make him a nightmare for opponents to guard. He had his moments on Friday.
There are those plays he makes and you see the possibilities of what Jefferson could be down the line. He is a player certainly to keep an eye on.
Dayne McBroom 2020 Oklahoma Power
McBroom is a shifty guard who might not look very quick but he can leave you standing there in a hurry. His ball handling can get loose at times but for the most part he played well on Day 1 and did not end up with a ton of turnovers.
He did a good job of placing with pace but not rushing things. He was a key factor in the Power’s win over Oklahoma Hoops. He is the type of player to make someone look silly if they try to press him full court because of his change of speed.
Ke’Veon Sharp 2020 Ok Respect
Sharp was an excellent compliment to Lancaster because Sharp has the vertical athletic ability that Lancaster does not possess. Sharp was unstoppable in the fast break. He would find a way to create contact and finish.
The Respect plays a fast brand of basketball and that fits Sharp’s game to a tee. The athletic guard was always in the passing lane and alert on the defensive end. Lancaster had a great day offensively but Sharp was not far behind him.
It will be interesting to see if this dynamic duo can continue to light up the score boards this weekend.
Donovan Vickers 2020 Team Griffin
Vickers was one of the best two-way players on Day 1. He did an excellent job one-on-one defensive situations of moving his feet, showing his hands, but not giving up position.
Offensively, he pushed the pace while also finding teammates in their spots to score. His jumper could be more consistent but he showed there is potential as he hit a few perimeter shots.
Vickers was the best and most versatile player on the floor on Day 1 and he showed off his innate ability to make winning plays.
Nate Goodlow 2020 Team Griffin
This was not Goodlow’s greatest offensive performance but it was his defense that stood out on Day 1. He finished with three steals and one tie-up that led to a jump ball.
His quick feet were his biggest weapon Friday night as he quickly cut off his matchup from getting to the rim.
Of his three steals, two of them led to open floor layups and helped his team’s defensive intensity pick up.
Goodlow is one of those talented defenders who does not always get it right technique-wise on the defensive end but his instincts are tools that you just can’t teach.
