A Scout’s Take: The League (Part 2s)
A Scout’s Take: The League (Part 2)
WESTMINSTER, CA—Compton Magic put on another worthwhile event as they presented another nice addition of “The League.” With the exception of recent USC commitment Onyeka Okongwu sitting out due to an injury, the rest of Compton Magic Elite were on display as well as number of up-and-coming prospects from the San Diego-based Gamepoint program.
Francisco’s Finest
Beyond his years
Kijani Wright (Windward) Club Team: Compton Magic 15u
2022, PF, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds
Joel’s Take: Wright is well-built prospect who possesses good length, soft hands, and a skill set that trumps his youth. He rebounds in and out of his area and his outlet passing is quick and decisive. He runs well in transition and can finish through contact. He can weave through the traffic while running the break, and his passing exhibits his high IQ for the game.
Jack of all trades
Jakob Alamudun (Marina) Club Team: Cali Rebels 17u
2019, 6-foot-5, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: When it comes to production, look no further than Alamudun. The bulky wing-type can play inside and out due to his strength and feel for the game. He uses his strength to post up smaller defenders and he has a knack to score. He can shoot the 3-ball, attack from the triple threat position, and he rarely forces the issue.
Burst galore
Jaden Byers (Corona Centennial) Club Team: Compton Magic 15u
2021, PG, 5-foot-10, 145 pounds
Joel’s Take: Byers is an electrifying lefty point guard prospect who plays at breath-taking pace. His burst is tremendous and he even tried to throw it down on a would-be defender while attacking the rim. He can knock down the 3-ball, convert the runner over length, or drop off a dime to an open teammate. He needs to learn how to change speeds and play at a more efficient pace, but he’s a talent.
Playmaker
Keavie Love (El Camino) Club Team: Gamepoint 15u
2021, SG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: When evaluating Love one of the first traits I notice is attention to detail. He can snatch the rebound, lead the break, and his passing was on-point and quite nifty at times. He can slash his way to the rim and shows good body control and strength while finishing. His head is always up while navigating the defense and he is equally effective as a scorer as well as a facilitator.
Allstate “Good Hands” Team
Dillon Wilhite (Cathedral Catholic) Club Team: Gamepoint 15u
2021, C, 6-foot-7, 220 pounds
Joel’s Take: Wilhite has big frame with nice shoulder width as well as long arms. However, the most impressive aspect of his physical traits is his magnetic hands. He isn’t a great leaper, but he does know how to carve out space to finish plays over length. He showed a nice touch from the elbow and he was able to convert over either shoulder as well.
