Battle at the Lakes: 2020 Illinois Evals Pt 2
PrepHoopsIllinois covered the Battle at the Lakes over the weekend in Minnesota. It featured a great group of Illinois programs. Check out all our 2020 evaluations in one place! Here is part two of our look at the 2020s from Illinois at Battle!
G Davis Walker (Team RWA)
Walker is a home schooled 6’1” combo guard that really impressed with his play for Team RWA. The 2020 wing was lights out for the most part drilling mid-range pull ups from all over the floor. Also connected on a pull up three to open the game. Good strength and athleticism out of this guard which allow him to finish in the paint. He is more than just a scorer as he displays a solid understanding of the game making crisp dishes. Defensively he moves well laterally and got several steals. Went for 14 points. Low-majors and mid-majors need to monitor him this spring.
PG Beau Frericks (Team RWA)
This Cary Grove 6’0” point guard can really shoot the basketball! He has a crisp pull up game that he sets up with strong shot fakes. Clean release from both mid-range and three. Knock down shooting point guard that is fundamentally sound. He had 13 points. Need to see him more, but definitely could see him as a D2 player.
C Nate Seputis (Team RWA)
Seputis is currently the top 2020 center prospect in the state of Illinois. In the game we saw he didn’t have his best game by any means, but we are still on board with him being one of the better bigs in the class. Opened the game with short jumper off a curl. Also had a steal and that he took the other way for a dunk. The perimeter shot wasn’t falling and he didn’t score much in the post. Definitely has to get stronger. Still think that he is worth monitoring for mid-major and low-major schools.
PF Tremear Fraley (Team RWA)
Fraley is a big and physical post that shined last fall at the Pangos Frosh/Soph camp and then we didn’t see much out of him during the high school season. He has the body for sure at 6’8” with broad shoulders and is really strong. Active defensively blocking shots. He also had a monster jam on Friday night. Needs some offensive refinement, but a lot of things to like here in a potential low-major post.
SG Samuel Herenton (Team RWA)
Herenton is an athletic two guard from Providence St. Mel. The bouncy guard has major springs. Burst in transition with the ball converting an and-1 and another spinning drive. Also hit a three. Brings some tools defensively as well. Best I have seen him play over his career. Worth continuing to monitor.
SG Elijah Jones (Team RWA)
Jones is a new name from Marian Catholic. The 6’6” small forward is a long and rangy wing that was a little weak finishing around the hoop mostly due to his lack of strength. Has all the tools he just has to put it together. Couple smooth straight line takes showed immense potential.
SG Daniel Mordi (Team RWA)
Mordi is a two guard from St. Rita that has a strong body. Bit of a long release on his jumper, but did hit a three and pull up from 15 feet. Showed some strength off the bounce getting to the rack. Small college player at this stage with the chance to elevate.
SF Jayden Johnson (Fundamental U)
Johnson is a big bodied two guard that can flat out shoot the basketball! He drilled multiple in their early morning game. The Batavia 2020 standout is best shooting off the catch with a clean looking release. He has deep range on his shot to well beyond the three point arc. Also showed growth as a passer. Mid-major shooter!
PG Luke Scheffers (Fundamental U)
Scheffers is a pass first point guard that is best running the show. The St. Charles North point guard is a crisp passer that pushes it in the open floor and directs his offense well in the half court. Love how he works in the pick and roll! Jumper wasn’t falling when we saw him, but he is usually a pretty good shooter. D2’s should keep tabs on him.
SG Matt Ambrose (Fundamental U)
Ambrose can really shoot the basketball! Plus shooter that moves well without the ball. The Stevenson 2020 also mixed in a pair of runners and a layup with his off hand. Small college player right now that could elevate.
SG John Carragher (Fundamental U)
This tough and gritty forward is a quality role player for Fundamental U. He doesn’t have a high ceiling at the next level, but as a D3/NAIA player you know what you are getting with this tough wing that can hit a three off the catch on occasion.
PF Josh Preston (Fundamental U)
Preston is another tough forward! He made a couple of quick post moves and is always ready to be assertive when the ball comes his way. Limited athletically. Quality small college player.
SF Connor Kochera (Fundamental U)
Kochera continues to be intriguing to us. The St. Viator 2020 wing impressed earlier in the spring and has continued to do so. He has size and broad shoulders. Quality athlete that has skill. Uses shot fakes to set up one dribble pull ups and drives. Solid ball handler with long strides. Runs the floor well. D2’s have him on your radar!
SF Mehki Robinson (Fundamental U)
This Naperville Central 6’6” wing put himself on our radar over the weekend. He has nice size and athleticism. Drilled a mid-range jumper coming off a curl and fought hard on the glass. Needs some refinement, but is an upside small college player that could go D2 eventually.
