Spring League Standouts: Wednesday Night
On Wednesday night, the Hillsborough County spring league continued at Jefferson High.
The host Dragons welcomed Plant and Bloomingdale to its gym. Both Jefferson and Plant had full rosters while Bloomingdale had only six players at its disposal with an interim head coach.
Here is a look at the standouts from the 3-game slate.
Reagan Weiss (Plant)
A lengthy 2020 forward, Reagan Weiss played very assertively with 2019 guard Logan Morrissey sidelined with an ankle injury. Weiss is known for his 3-point touch, but he drove to the rack and finish more often than not. He was a good presence on inside plays and showed nice play recognition.
Josh Schneider (Bloomingdale)
Bloomingdale relied on the leadership of Josh Schneider for much of the night. The 2019 guard/forward is as vocal as they come, a gritty attacker, makes sure to always be moving and is active all around.
Javonte Solomon (Jefferson)
The best playmaker on the Dragons side, Javonte Solomon likes to score. The 2019 guard is athletic, has a good mid-range jumper and weaves by contact as an attacker to the rim.
David Fitzgerald (Plant)
Part of a deep group of rising juniors, David Fitzgerald is certainly a player to watch. He’s sneaky athletic, long, sound and smart and has bought into the system Plant has in place under head coach Joe Willis. I think Fitzgerald can really big good if he gains confidence this summer.
Justin Santana (Bloomingdale)
In the opening game, Justin Santana missed a 3-pointer but caught a board and put back a two-handed shot at the buzzer to beat Jefferson 42-40 (video here). The 2019 guard is an awfully impressive 3-point shooter, a reliable on-ball defender, team player and a guy who hustles on the boards.
Ben Hidremichael (Plant)
With Ronald Boyd graduating, Plant needs a new guy to take over the offense as the main ballhandler. 2020 guard Ben Hidremichael showed he could handle that task. He is a good passer, smart shooter and someone who plays the game with a purpose.
Austin Lozada (Jefferson)
A 2019 point guard, Lozada performed admirably for an athletic Dragons group. He proved to be a nice passer, reliable rebounder and a guy who plays with vision on both ends of the floor.
