17U Kansas College Prospects (Guards)- Prep Hoops Series: Kansas City
The final installment in my recap of the Prep Hoops Series in Kansas City last weekend. This article is a breakdown of some of the 1/2 guards I was able to observe who are college prospects.
Certainly not a comprehensive list and a recommendation on level may or may not be included based on my familiarity with them.
Jun Murdock (2019)- River City Elite 17U
Jun has quite the motor that he uses on offense and defense as he never seems to slow down. I’ve been able to see Jun play multiple times throughout the year and each time I have been impressed.
He is a great facilitator and is best in a defense that pressures the ball as he moves well laterally and is bought into defense.
He seems to understand that he doesn’t always have to go for the home run and get the steal, knowing that solid ball pressure can lead to team steals that may not be credited to him on the boxscore.
He drew the assignment of Noel Coleman who is a Division I prospect for the KC Pacers this past weekend and was able to disrupt Noel when he had the ball and create opportunities for River City.
Offensively he struggled shooting the ball from the outside but he is at his best when he draws secondary defenders and facilitates for his teammates. Jun is able to do that consistently with his quickness and change of pace.
Jun has heard from a handful of schools this spring up to the Division II level.
AJ Dickerson (2019)- SSA Elite Black 17U
AJ was a consistent scorer this past weekend while also showing value as a legitimate two way player. He is athletic and plays with effort consistently this weekend in the games I was able to watch.
He can make plays with the ball in his hand or without but his outside shot needs some refining to be a consistent scoring threat this summer.
AJ has heard from NAIA schools and a Division II so far this spring.
Koriyon Carr (2018)- Kansas Hoggs 17U
Koriyon is committed to Neosho CC for next season but is staying sharp by playing with the Kansas Hoggs this AAU season.
In the semi-final game versus Mokan Select, he was the heart and soul of the Hoggs offense and was single handedly keeping them in the game down the stretch.
Koriyon had a little bit of everything on display on Sunday when I saw him against Mokan. He was able to incorporate his package off the dribble with his shooting ability and really be an offensive catalyst.
Coaches in the region should watch him closely as he has expressed interest in taking 1 year of juco ball and using that experience to be an impact player at a four year school.
Trey Bates (2019)- Mokan Select 17U
While Trey did not get the lion share of playing time behind Courtland Soll, who was terrific as well this weekend, Trey still showed promise off the bench for Mokan.
Trey is great in transition where he uses his his quickness and burst to push the tempo and create opportunities. That paired with his court vision give him characteristics that will translate well to the next level.
Looking into the next high school season, Trey is setup for a huge year with the departure of Doc Covington as his team will rely on him more than ever to be successful.
Levi Braun (2019)- SSA Elite Black 17U
Levi was not as hot from the outside as he has been in other events this Spring but was still very effective for SSA this weekend.
His ability to produce offense off the dribble and make the right play really paid dividends in their 80-26 statement game to open the Prep Hoops Series as Levi netted 16 points.
Look for him to heat up from beyond the arc in SSA’s next tournament appearance as he is due for another big weekend.
Washburn’s head coach was in the building watching him on Saturday as he currently holds an offer there.
Noel Coleman (2019)- KC Pacers Blue 17U
Noel is very talented combo guard in the states from Belgium who ran the show for the Pacers this weekend, leading them to the 17U championship game where they defeated Mokan Select.
Noel’s game features a smooth stroke from outside, good feel for the game, and someone who can create opportunities off the dribble either scoring or facilitating appropriately.
If it was his game, Noel led the Pacers in scoring but if someone else had the hot hand or was effective, he was not shy about sharing the ball and the spotlight to help his team win.
Noel currently projects as a mid-major division I prospect.
