Jayhawk Invitational Recap (Class of 2019 Wings)
Here are some of the top Class of wings from last weekend’s Jayhawk Invitational in Overland Park, KS
Jamonta Black 6’4″ MO Team Carroll (Rock Bridge): A new Missouri State commit, Black is a smooth wing player who is very comfortable with the ball in his hands of playing without the ball. His size and athletic ability make him a tough cover because he can attack the basket or pull up and knock down jumpers off the dribble. He also displayed his nice stroke from 3-point range. When he got out in transition, it was a dunk.
Erick Slack 6’4″ NdaGym (North Kansas City): It was my first time seeing this talented wing in action and I was very impressed with his ability to score the ball in a variety of ways. In one game against NLHA, he scored 16 points in a four-minute stretch, including four consecutive 3-pointers. Not only did he shoot the deep ball, but he can score on tough, twisting drives to the basket. He has good size to play inside and outside.
Broc Smith 6’4″ MO Team Carroll (Republic): An excellent wing players who was one of the best shooters that I watched during the weekend. He made 11 3-pointers in pool play, including seven triples in his second game in which he scored 26 points. He has a quick release to go with his excellent range. He has good size, ball handling and passing ability to go with his shooting prowess. He picked up an offer from Drury with several other Division II programs in attendance to watch him.
Tyler Nelson 6’2″ KC Spurs Black (Rockhurst): A very energetic wing player who has a high motor and a lot of bounce. He will throw down a dunk in transition. He has a good physical build and he really excels in the transition game. He also knocked down a couple of corner 3-pointers, which is something he has improved upon. He also puts in a strong effort on the defensive end.
Kaden Spruell 6’3″ Marcus Denmon Elite (Blue Springs): An impressive wing player who has excellent fundamentals and plays the game well from the neck up. He has a strong body which enables him to post up against smaller guards. He handles the ball well and can knock down perimeter shots. He can really pass the basketball and help put his teammates in the right spots. He is also a very good communicator on the court, always talking on defense. He really knows how to play the game.
Arthur Williams 6’3″ Kansas City Magic White (Ruskin): While walking around the gym, I saw this kid just getting bucket after bucket without a lot of effort. I had to take a seat to watch more and Williams continued to get buckets. He was smooth with his dribble drive moves as he weaved into traffic and scored through contact. He was very aggressive on offense.
Beau Washer 6’2″ MO Team Carroll (Father Tolton): A very capable wing player who you may not notice him on the court until you look at the score sheet and see that he’s scored 12-15 points. He always seems to be around the ball. He knows how to find openings and take advantage of his offensive opportunities, whether it is on strong cuts without the ball, offensive rebounds and transition 3-pointers.
