Prospect Spotlight: Cameron Savage (2019)
The live periods of AAU are where prospects make names for themselves. Some step into the national spotlight, others start gaining track with schools from various levels and some who have been under the radar for much of their career finally are seen by the right eyes. 2019 District Basketball Club’s Cameron Savage is looking to be one of the diamonds in the rough this summer.
After wrapping up a successful junior campaign helping orchestrate South Lakes to a 22-6 overall record, Savage isn’t satisfied and will look to further prove his winning ways throughout the AAU season.
“For me individually I had a pretty good year,” Savage continued, “I was the leading scorer, first team all-region, first team all-district and second team all-state. I averaged 15 points, four assists and 1.5 steals per game.”
The 5-foot-10 floor general spent much of this season working on his body.
“Definitely my weight,” Savage replied when talking about his biggest improvement this past season. “I was really small, so I knew I had to put time in the weight room. I had to learn how to fight through screens and I had to learn how to use my body. The older you get, the more physical the game gets. Another thing was just knocking down open shots with confidence. I know because of my height, I have to convert on those looks. Lastly, just being a leader. Being really vocal and making sure my guys are where they need to be.”
It doesn’t take long to realize Savage’s presence on the floor. As he stated, he’s extremely vocal. Especially on the defensive end. If he’s guarding the ball, he’s letting his teammates know or vocalizing the coverage on the upcoming ball-screen. Off the ball, he’s constantly calling out cutters, letting his teammate know that he’s got their help or calling out off-ball screens on the opposite end.
Another specific aspect about Savage’s approach is his intensity every minute he’s on the floor. Not many guys are out there picking up their man full court possession after possession.
Savage is one of the few.
“It just helps me,” Savage told Prep Hoops. “We always talk about playing in the moment. When I’m in the moment, I’m talking and I’m active. That keeps me locked in and focused on every possession. If I’m not active or talking, my mind is wandering. The more I talk, the more I feel like I’m engaged in the game.”
Savage doesn’t hold any offers currently, but has been hearing from American, Lafayette, UC-Irvine and UMBC. Following Savage’s performance at Hoop Group’s Spring Jam Fest this past weekend, Gannon University has heavy interest as well.
What can a college program expect from the 3.2 student athlete?
“A super hard worker,” Savage said. “A leader. You’re getting a great teammate and most of all, you’re getting a ball player. A guy who wants to be a part of big games. I just love this game, man.”
