Midwest Live: Day 1 standouts (Wings)
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The first day of the Midwest Live tournament in Lawrence, Kan. featured several standout performances. Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several wing players who stood out on the day.
Yonathan Elful, 6’3, G/F, 2019, North Kansas City (Mo.), NDaGym
Elful had a big game off the bench for NDaGym and scored points by being aggressive and attacking the basket. He brings toughness and a willingness to compete at the defensive end of the court. He is a terrific rebounder and runs the floor exceptionally well. Elful’s play off the bench Friday was a big part of NDaGym’s win over Heat in the opening game for both teams on Friday.
Jadon Gilpin, 6’3, G, 2020, Glendale (Mo.), Missouri Team Carroll
A young guard with terrific size and athleticism, Gilpin showcased an all-around offensive skill set on Friday in a runaway win over the KC Spurs Silver in a 16U match-up. Gilpin can handle the ball and create his own shot, shoot the 3 with good range and can get all the way to the bucket off the bounce. On Friday, he also had it working in transition as Team Carroll forced several turnovers that led to easy baskets at the offensive end.
Marty Jackson, 6’5, F, 2018, Hogan Prep (Mo.), NDaGym
Jackson is a long, rangy athlete who plays bigger than his listed height and brings a well-rounded skill set to the court. He impressed on Friday with his willingness to defend multiple positions and largely guarded Heat guard Javon Reliford throughout much of the second half. He can step out and shoot the 3 a little and gets a lot of garbage buckets in the paint due to his activity off the ball.
Erik Slack, 6’4, F, 2019, North Kansas City (Mo.), NDaGym
Slack is a strong, physical player with a well-rounded skill set and the ability to play inside-out basketball. He is a good rebounder, capable of handling the ball a little on the perimeter and scores the ball in a variety of ways. He showed an all-around game on Friday in a hard-fought win over the Heat, going for 22 points.
Jack Souder, 6’3, G/F, 2020, Blue Valley North (Kan.), KC Spurs Black
A slasher who is moves well without the ball and finds himself open a lot around the basket. Has the ability to attack the basket off the bounce and got to the free throw line several times on Friday against Speed 2020. He has good size and athleticism and uses it well at both ends of the floor.
