Midwest Live! Saturday notes, Part I
COUNCIL BLUFFS — There was plenty of talent on display Saturday at the Iowa West Fieldhouse at the Midwest Live! event with tons of Iowa teams and players in action. Here are some notes on players that stood out.
2019 G/F Collin Breen, 6’3, Pump ‘N Run Black (Fairfield): Breen is listed at just 6-foot-3, but he’s got length for his size and position that he utilizes to his benefit. Displayed a nice mid-range jumper as well.
2019 F Rhett Zeglen, 6’2, Pump ‘N Run Black (Mount Pleasant): Zeglen was a bit of a pest inside – in the best possible sense. He always found himself in the thick of things and used his physicality to draw fouls and his strength to finish through contact. Used ball fakes extensively to create angles.
2019 G Carter Hartman, 6’1, Pump ‘N Run Black (Xavier): Made his biggest impact defensively with active hands that harassed ballhandlers.
2019 G Hunter Snyder, 6’2, Iowa Prep Red (Bettendorf): Snyder acquitted himself well both with his movement off the ball and with it in his hands. He moved well away from the ball, slashing to the bucket to make himself available for easy buckets. He also finished well in traffic and showed a nice jumper in catch-and-shoot situations.
2019 W Zachary Martinek 6’4, Iowa Prep Red (Rockwell): The rangy wing did well in transition, running the floor with purpose and displayed a really nifty spin move that got him a layup on a fast break. Strong catch-and-shoot skills, too.
2019 F Cody Hicks, 6’5, Iowa Prep Red (Cedar Falls): Hicks bullied his way into space inside regularly, both to get shots and rebounds. Finished through contact on a number of occasions.
2019 G Carter Duwa, 6’0, Iowa Prep Red (Bettendorf): The point guard plays with fluidity and feel, especially on his jumper, which has smooth mechanics.
2019 G Aaron Price, 6’1, Iowa Prep Red (Aplington-Parkersburg): Plays with pose and patience offensive, but on defense he’s active and aggressive.
2019 PG Cliff McCray, 6’3, Showtime Hoopers (Sioux City): The Hoopers had a tough go of it against the KC Spurs, but McCray comported himself well. He’s incredibly quick and a heady offensive player.
2019 G Robert Mosey, 6’4, Showtime Hoopers (Sioux City): A smooth yet explosive athlete, Mosey was aggressive to the rim and used his hangtime to his advantage – except for the one time he got fouled hard and took a hard spill (though he stayed in the game).
2019 G Dymonte Hawkins, 6’0, Team Iowa Red (Cedar Rapids): While just 6-feet tall, Hawkins was the best rebounder on the floor for much of the game. He’s an excellent leaper and has a great feel for timing and angles. He was, simply, a rebounding machine.
2019 F Chandlir Haug, 6’4, Team Iowa Red (Cedar Rapids): Was really strong defensively, getting into passing lanes and bothering ballhandlers. Helped his team by running the floor well to spark transition.
