2019 Trinity Catholic G Dominic Pugh talks state run, recruitment and summer ahead
Trinity Catholic made history by advancing to its first ever state tournament this season.
The Celtics (22-9) clipped Pensacola Catholic 55-54 to move into the Class 5A state title game against powerhouse University. Trinity Catholic came away empty handed, but this is a team that brings back its top five scorers from a year ago.
The second leading scorer for the Celtics was 2019 guard Dominic Pugh. The 6’1″, 160-pounder was named the Ocala Star-Banner boys basketball player of the year earlier this month. He averaged 12.9 PPG and produced a 28-point outing in the region final win over Melbourne Central Catholic.
“I had a pretty good junior year that really went out with a bang. The state run was unbelievable too. There was a point in the playoffs where we were unstoppable,” Pugh told Prep Hoops Florida. “I learned how to take over a game when I need to without being selfish and put a 100 percent effort into everything while I’m on the court.”
No offers have come yet for Pugh, but he holds interest from various schools including Boston, Presbyterian, Murray State, Bethune Cookman and Arkansas State.
Pugh is playing for the Q6 All-Stars this summer for travel ball.
“I know Coach Willie Anderson is looking for a lot out of me and he sets my expectations very high, so I just have to continue to get better and collect multiple offers this summer,” Pugh said.
In terms of his biggest strengths, Pugh called that his leadership, ability to get others involved, passing and scoring. He’s aiming to work on his athleticism overall and to get stronger this summer.
On a deep and team oriented group at Trinity Catholic, Pugh certainly stands out on a nightly basis as a scorer and unselfish player. If he can add muscle to his skinny frame, there is a chance he’ll start to see those offers roll through. He has the skillset, but he just needs to bulk up in order to hang with players at the next level.
