Recruiting Report: Cliff McCray (2019)
Without a doubt one of Iowa’s best point guards, 6-foot-2 junior Cliff McCray has already seen some serious college interest come his way, and is a guy that D1 and D2 coaches will be monitoring closely this spring and summer.
McCray’s already got one D2 offer, and mentioned to PHIA with other schools have been in contact with him.
“I got an offer from Wayne State, and interest from UN-O, Southwest Minnesota, USD, NDSU, Winona State, Augustana and Sioux Falls,” he said.
“My goal is to pick up some more offers, and find the team where I’ll best fit at when I’m looking to make a commitment next year.”
He was torching opponents all season as a junior, and McCray says it’s his improved ability to handle the rock and shoot it that led to his success this past winter.
The athletic, do-it-all lead guard averaged 14.7 points on 55 percent shooting, 5.7 assists, 3.3 steals and 6.5 rebounds per game, all team-bests.
“I’ve been working on a lot of game situations, ball-handling and my shot has become a lot better. And then my defense has improved a lot. And I’ve been in the weight-room, too, just so I can hang with bigger people,” said McCray.
“This year, I had to do a little more than last year. I thought I passed the ball really well, I almost broke our school record in assists, so I’m happy with that.”
Cliff McCray is ranked by Prep Hoops as a top 25 prospect in his class.
Now, he’s playing spring ball with Showtime Hoopers 17U. It’s a good team he’s with, and McCray will be turning a lot of heads this summer.
“I’m looking forward to getting to some bigger tournaments and competing, and getting some more looks this summer,” he said. “And just go out on a strong note.”
