Recruiting report: Keyon Thomas (2019)
Keyon Thomas is establishing himself as one of the state’s premier point guards in the 2019 class and opened the spring with a strong performance at the Route 66 Kickoff in Oklahoma City while competing for the KC Spurs.
He is known as a fast-paced player who can get to the basket and is excels at the drive-and-kick game. He finishes well in traffic and continues to work on his perimeter shooting.
“I also love to set my teammates up for great shots,” he says. “Now, I’ve been developing a consistent jump shot to make my game more difficult on the offensive end. I play with energy, love to communicate. I love playing pressure defense and making others uncomfortable.”
Thomas filled the stat sheet as he averaged 22 points, five assists and six rebounds per game and helped lead Bonner Springs to a 19-3 season.
“I was a team leader over all seniors and juniors,” Thomas said. “I was the teams go to player besides our other guard. I was a big time play maker. I made sure that we controlled the tempo of the game at all times. I played off the ball so that I would be in a position to attack and score.”
Thomas says competing for the KC Spurs has helped his game grow.
“The experience is great,” Thomas said. “Traveling all over the map playing against the best of the best while being a non-shoe company profit team. It’s great playing with a team full of underdogs. I hope to take all the skills and all of the things I’ve been taught to the next level.”
Thomas says he is working this offseason on improving his perimeter shot.
“I would love to get better at having a consistent jump shot,” Thomas says. “More elevation and getting my release higher. I also would love to get quicker footwork as well. My focus has been getting faster and stronger.”
Thomas is currently drawing interest from several schools, including UMKC, Wichita State, Kansas State, San Diego and others. He took an unofficial visit to UMKC during the season.
“It’s just up to me to turn these into offers during this last year on the circuit,” he says.
