Rankings Update: 2020 Stock-Risers
While pretty much everyone moved position in some fashion in this most recent update of the 2020 Prospect Rankings, here are seven of the prospects who made a major jump towards the top.
[12 → 2] Dominiq Penn, 6’0” PG, Dublin Coffman / All Ohio Red EYBL
Penn has become a true three-level scoring threat off the dribble now that his pull-up jumper has become consistent in the midrange. The key to stopping Penn is staying in front of him, since he’s not very tall, but good luck with that one. He’s lightning quick with the ball in his hands and has been clearly been working on the craft.
[37 → 19] Max Land, 6’5” W/F, Moeller / Queen City Prophets
The ceiling is the roof for Max Land. Although he spent time on the Moeller bench this season, the amount of basketball IQ and maturity that he could’ve gained from being around the program is significant. Land is an explosive leaper who is expected to continue adding inches, in terms of height. We like him as a bouncy power forward prospect long-term, although he likes to handle the ball outside. If he’s going to stay out there, the jumper needs to come a long way.
[ 57 → 25] Mark Wise, 6’3” G, EG10 / Deer Park
Wise likes to take the ball into the teeth of the defense. He’s able to handle contact on the drive because of a strong upper body. If the defense helps, we’ve also been impressed with the flashes he’s shown as a facilitator. He could be lethal if he surrounds himself with shooters.
The adidas Gaunlet Gold sponsored program EG10 publicly declared that Wise will run with them going forward this summer. The Gauntlet will provide an interesting measuring stick for the Cincy point guard this season. Kent State has offered.
[49 → 35] Tahj Staveskie, 5’9” PG, Rebels / Sandusky
Staveskie improved as a decision maker from his 15U season to now. Although Staveskie has highlight-worthy handles, he’s starting to make more quality basketball decisions as the point. He’s no longer a volume scorer, as he’s starting to beat defenses with his gifted vision and court awareness.
Unfortunately, Staveskie is dealing with a lower body issue and will be sidelined for the next 3-6 weeks, per his AAU coach Justin Ferguson.
[100 → 33] Hayden Stone, 6’8” C, Nova (Alleyne) / Carey
Stone has shot up as far as height and impact since our initial 2020 rankings. According to his AAU program and various other reliable sources, Stone has flashed real potential as a physical post player. The kid is tough and has been eating up space in the post. He changes games with his defensive rebounding ability.
[99 → 61] Tevin Jackson, 5’9” PG, St. Ignatius
Jackson was the pillar of the Ignatius offense this winter, a disciplined program that requires a patient ball-secure point guard. His demeanor and style of play gives promise to the future, as programs looking for a reliable point guard could offer scholarships. Jackson also is pretty good at finishing with either hand and is a capable shooter when he has space.
[93 → 81] Cali Davis, 6’1” G, Hidden Gems Black / Africentric
Davis impressed in Africentric’s Final Four run this winter with his level of activity. Although he’s not really a shot creator on the offensive end, Davis is good for about six points a night through sheer hustle. He’s super quick and could thrive in a system that likes to pressure full-court. We’re excited to see him in an increased offensive role this summer.
