Spring League Standouts: Tuesday Night
The Hillsborough County Spring League opened play up on Tuesday night.
Originally set for three games at Sickles, the action was moved to Alonso after a power outage due to bad storms affected Sickles.
Final scores:
Game 1 – Alonso 57, Sickles 47
Game 2 – Alonso 69, Armwood 46
Game 3 – Sickles 52, Armwood 49
Here is a look at the standouts from the evening.
2019 G Jean Rivera (Sickles)
The best pure shooter on the floor tonight was 2019 Sickles guard Jean Rivera. The rising senior had some super bright moments, but he was overpassing at times and didn’t set his feet on some hurried shots. The Gryphons will be leaning on Rivera plenty after graduating eight seniors and I think he’ll continue to improve his game this spring and summer session.
2019 G/F Sager Cavalier (Alonso)
The best scoring threat for Alonso, 2019 forward Sager Cavalier is athletic and smart. He always pushes the ball in tempo and rarely, if ever looks tired. A true team player, Cavalier can score in bunches and finds ways to get his teammates involved with a simple head fake and pass.
2019 G/F Kamalii Findlay (Alonso)
Stronger and in better shape than this time a year ago, Kamalii Findlay is growing into a nice player and leader. The 2019 forward takes smart outside shots and can get inside with his brute strength. Findlay is vocal for his team and rarely comes out of the game.
2019 G Kei-Juwan Hymon (Armwood)
From a team that graduates 10 players, Armwood looks a whole lot different this spring. The last name Hymon is a familiar one though with 2018 guard Ky’Llen, the older brother of Kei-Juwan serving as a reliable outside shooter for the Hawks. Kei-Juwan comes in a similar mold as a shooter, but the rising senior isn’t afraid to attack inside and play tough-nosed defense.
2020 G/F Jordan Savage (Alonso)
This is the second time in last two weeks that I’ve seen Jordan Savage hoop. I’ve come away impressed both times. The 2020 forward always finds ways to grab boards on both ends of the floor and his unselfishness leads to buckets for his teammates. He still has to work on his instincts and basketball IQ but that will come with more time with varsity.
2020 G D’Angelo Jackson & 2019 G Julian Canuleas (Sickles)
On a new-look Sickles team, 2020 guard D’Angelo Jackson and 2019 guard Julian Canuleas are two guys to keep an eye on. Canuleas started both games and ran the point for his side. Jackson came off the bench and gave his team really good minutes with his slashing ability. Jackson will improve once he takes an added focus on defense.
2020 G EJ Mitchell & 2020 G Kenny Coulbertson (Armwood)
A pair of rising junior guards, EJ Mitchell and Kenny Coulbertson took turns running the Armwood offense. By the second game, a close loss to Sickles, the duo was playing well. Mitchell was hitting key shots for the Hawks and Coulbertson was pushing the floor uptempo. Both players will be worth monitoring this summer and beyond.
