Prospect Spotlight: Tyjean Burrell (2019)
Antelope junior Tyjean Burrell has a chance to make big splash this spring and summer on the 17U circuit. He’s hoping to see some existing D2 interest materialize into D1 looks.
The 6-foot-3 guard will rely on his high motor and ability to score in bunches when trying to turn some heads of higher-level college coaches.
“My strengths are that I’m a high energy guy; I rebound, I shoot and I just like to score. That was a big role for me on my team this year, was a I just had to score the ball, and make big plays for my team,” said Burrell.
“My mid-range game this year was really good, and I’m very athletic and I rebound well. What I need to work on is ball-handling and getting my jump-shot quicker, and just continue to get better with my basketball IQ.”
Burrell transferred into Antelope this past season and says when he was eligible to return, he didn’t skip a beat.
“I’m a transfer so I had a 30-day sit. My role after that was big, I didn’t have a slump or anything, I just made the team better and made my teammates better, and we were rolling,” said Burrell, who looked ahead a bit to next season.
“My role next year is to going to be more or a leadership role. This year, I played with a lot of seniors, and I had to lead, but they were leading me and teaching me things. But next year, I’ll have to lead more and teach the new guys how to work and how to approach the season.”
He’ll spend his spring and summer playing in front of a slew of D1 and D2 college coaches on the adidas Gauntlet. His hopes are to see that D1 interest come his way.
“My goals for the summer are to just work hard everyday, and I believe I can get a lot of D1 interest,” said Burrell. “I have some D2 interest already. If I play my game and show the coaches that I play hard I can get some interest from the D1 level.”
