Adidas Invitational (Class of 2019 Point/Combo Guards)
Prep Hoops Missouri was in St. Louis for the Adidas Invitational. Here is a look at some of the top Class of 2019 point guards/combo guards at the weekend event:
Tayari Goodwin 5’9″ Arsenal Hoops: A slick floor leader who helped lead his team to the semifinals of the 17U division. He does a good job of keeping the ball moving and playing at different paces when necessary. He is a good facilitator who will make good decisions with the ball, but he also has the ability to get buckets. He is an excellent 3-point shooter, especially off the catch.
Cameron Teson 5’10” St. Louis Knights: The talented guard put together a nice string of offensive performances on Sunday when he was really getting buckets. With his team having only five players on the final day, Teson stepped up and carried the team on offense. He scored 38 points in the first game and 22 points in the second game. He did a nice job of pushing the pace and scoring in transition. In the half court offense, he got in the lane and score and knocked down a number of 3-pointers. He played with his usual confidence and swag.
Kevin Jones 5’10” Gateway: A small combo guard who plays the game with an endless motor on both ends of the court. He plays the game hard and tough, especially with the ball in his hands. If you try to reach in and take it from him, be prepared to get the subtle shoulder to the chops to back you up. He gets to the basket through contact and can knock down 3-pointers in streaks. He also gives a full effort on the defensive end.
Damien Loyd 5’10” Gateway: Excellent lead guard who has made big strides over the course of the year to become a nice prospect. He’s gotten stronger and a little more explosive which has really made him a more dangerous offensive player. He was always a good facilitator, but he can really score when he has to with his ability to get to the basket with toughness or make 3-pointers.
Mekai Ray 5’7″ St. Louis Majestics: A lightning quick floor leader who keeps the pace going at full-tilt boogie for his team. When he gets the ball, he’s flying up the court looking for easy scores in transition for anyone on his team that will run with him. He can knock down an open 3-pointer, plus he can be a real pest on the defensive end. Helped his team to the 17U championship.
Derez Tipler 5’10” SEMO Bulls: A strong, physical point guards who has really developed his body over the course of his career. He still has the quickness go get by defenders and put defensive pressure on opposing ball handlers. He has a nice stop and pop jumper and he has the ability to knock down the deep ball.
