Prep Hoops Route 66 Kickoff: Standout Undersized 16U Guards
Undersized doesn’t mean undervalued. There were multiple prospects that showed they could be a factor whether it was for a half, a few possessions, or a whole game. Here are a few undersized 16U’s that fit the bill.
TreJon Ware (2020) Team Harden Houston 16U
TreJon makes up half of the undersized backcourt from Team Harden but he still has a big impact on the game. He is able to draw contact once in the paint and does so with his quickness off the dribble.
Cambridge Guidry (2020) Team Harden Houston 16U
While only being 5’8” like his cohort TreJon Ware, this doesn’t stop Cambridge from impacting the game in multiple ways. He can create opportunities for his teammates by getting paint touches and having good court vision to find the open man. Cambridge was a great complement to Bryce Griggs early in the second game, scoring 13 points.
He has the ability to knock down the three ball and looked comfortable shooting with a hand in his face, hitting four three-pointers in the matchup versus Kansas Pray and Play.
Tai Johnson (2020) Kansas Pray and Play 16U
The 5’9” guard did not fill up the stat sheet on Saturday but he did have some good flashes. He used his quickness with the ball in his hands but also without the ball, leading to a tough finish at the rim. With the right personnel around him, he can be very effective at creating opportunities for others.
Hezekiah Swanson (2020) Colorado Hawks 16U
While Hezekiah had a slow start to the day, he came out roaring for the Hawks in the second game. The 5’10” guard had the majority of the Hawks points early as he was aggressive in transition and off the dribble.
Hezekiah ended the second game with 20 points and did so with every point being inside the arc.
Trey Cundiff (2020) Rockets 918 16U
Trey didn’t have the best showing on Saturday but did have some really good spurts where he was energized and great for the Rockets.
At 5’9” Trey excelled most in transition, getting some easy buckets in the afternoon while also demonstrating good decision making on a 3 on 2 break. Although he appeared a bit frustrated throughout the day with the Rocket’s struggles, he was able to get a step on defenders on the perimeter and have chances to finish.
Tori Gabriel (2020) Edmond Ballers 16U
This 5’10” guard terrorized Team Harden 16U in the first half of their matchup, rising to the occasion against a very good team. He scored at all three levels and was effective at getting to the line as well.
Tori and Bryce Griggs (Team Harden) were easily the hottest prospects in the first half as Tori netted 21 points, keeping Edmond in the ballgame before Team Harden pulled away.
