Prospect Watch: Anthony Jones (2018)
Class of 2018 guard Anthony Jones of Wentzville Holt is a talented player who performed many key roles for the Indians this past season.
The 6’2″ Jones enjoyed a big senior year which included a near upset of Columbia Battle in the Class 5, District 7 championship game. His ability to score and make his teammates better have earned him recruiting interest from Division III schools such as Fontbonne and Millikin.
“Whenever my team was struggling on offense, I was the one to make a play or try to set up my teammates,” Jones said. “I liked to attack the basket or find the open man on offense.”
As a senior, Jones averaged 19.1 points and 7.4 rebounds while shooting 47 percent from the field. He also averaged nearly three assists and two steals per game.
Jones really stepped up his play during the district tournament in which he averaged 25 points in the Indians’ two games. He scored 23 points in Holt’s victory over Jefferson City in the semifinals. In the championship game against top-seeded Battle, Jones had 27 points and 10 rebounds in an overtime loss. He finished his career with more than 1,000 points.
“It was great playing here at Holt,” Jones said. “I really fed off my teammates and they fed off of me. Our coaches did a great job of getting ready to play every night.”
The college that gains Jones’ services will be getting a player with a lot of talent and plenty of upside to go along with it. Jones has good athleticism, quickness and the ability to make shots. He is a dangerous player in transition with his ability to attack the rim and finish.
“I really got better at attacking the basket and finishing at the rim this season,” Jones said. “I still need to improve my jump shot before I get to the next level.”
