Recruiting Report: Steven Adeyemi (2018)
Steven Adeyemi has never been to the Midwest before, but he’ll have plenty of time to get acclimated over the next four years. The 6-foot-3 Sunrise Mountain guard has committed to NAIA Silver Lakes College in Manitowoc, WI.
The plan was to stay out West, but an unexpected coaching change altered the path of Adeyemi’s hoops career.
“I was going to go to a different NAIA school in Montana, but the coach got fired, and then they took back my flight and everything (when I was going to visit),” said Adeyemi. “I had been talking to Silver Lake throughout the season, and they had been keeping tabs on me.”
Silver Lake offered him in late-December, and that one was added to offers from Utah State-Eastern, Central Christian, Providence (MT) and Air Force.
Even with the Division I offer from Air Force, Adeyemi chose to take the NAIA route. It’s making an immediate impact with a program that was most important to him.
“An NAIA school is somewhere where I can come in as a freshman and play right away. And at Air Force I wouldn’t really get to play, I’d just sit on the bench,” said Adeyemi.
“They wanted guys that could get up the floor and score and run and play defense and just be active on the court. And they think I can do that next year.”
He also liked the leisure of the small college town: there’s really not a whole lot to do there.
“I feel like it’s a place for me to focus, there’s not a lot of stuff to do. It’ll just be a place to study and play basketball, really,” said Adeyemi. “There’s not a lot of distractions out there. That’s why I like it.”
One thing’s for certain, the sunny Southwest is much different than the snowy Midwest.
“I know it’s super cold out there,” Adeyemi said.
