Under the radar prospects at the Matt Reynolds Showcase
The Matt Reynolds Oklahoma Showcase took place on Saturday. Players from all over competed in front of college coaches and Prep Hoops scouts. This list breaks down 2018 prospects flying under the radar that shined this weekend. This is part one of many installments from the showcase this weekend.
Christian Hoover 2018 6’2 Wing
Hoover was excellent defensively, which is not something typically said about most players in a showcase format. What makes Hoover a can’t miss small college prospect is his high motor on the floor. The physical traits of Hoover are great with athleticism, strength, and explosiveness. He was excellent at getting to the basket and finishing in traffic. Hoover projects to the JUCO to NAIA level.
Steffen Flowers 2018 6’4 Forward
Flowers is a guy that does not mind doing all of the dirty work for his squad. Saturday, Flowers dominated the boards at both ends of the floor. Clearly at 6’4 Flowers is not the tallest player on the floor most nights it is the effort and attention to detail that allows Flowers to grab boards at such a high level. Most of his points came off of looks inside or putbacks. Flowers will fill out a small college roster well because of his willingness to buy in and work hard in his role.
Jordan Flood 2018 6’2 Guard (Pictured)
Flood had a good senior season at Union. The skill set he brings to the table is high basketball IQ, a strong drive, and great touch on his mid-range shot. He has a sturdy build to him, which helps him finish in traffic, and play tough on defense. The big positive about Flood is he makes others around him better. Flood surprisingly does not have a lot going recruitment wise so far. He can come in an impact just about any program at the small college level because of his size, skill set, and versatility.
Nolan Childs 2018 6’4 Wing/Forward
Childs led Frontier to the state tournament this year with great scoring. Over his high school career, Childs has been utilized as a stretch four man. At the small college level, he is a bit undersized however he will be able to overcome due to his shooting from distance. He is lethal in catch and shoot situations. Childs will be a fantastic find for a college late in need of a stretch four that can fill it up.
Bryce McConnell 2018 5’11 Point Guard
McConnell is a super quick Point Guard that flew around the court reeking havoc on opponents. The energy he plays with is infectious to his team. He got to the rim very well throughout the day using his quick dribble and crafty moves to the cup. McConnell was also great at opening holes in the defense off the dribble to get his teammates open looks at the hoop. McConnell could be a guy a college takes a flyer on that turns into a good role player at the next level.
Garrett Sweeney 2018 6’1 Guard
Sweeney was a pleasant surprise at the camp. The Jay High School standout has a smooth game on the Wing. He plays with a high basketball IQ making the extra pass, taking the charge, and much more. Sweeney found his rhythm early getting to the basket, which led to sharpshooting from the outside.
Chris Johnson 6’2 2018 Guard
Johnson has a good handle with a strong build. The vision of Johnson was phenomenal allowing him to get the ball to wide open teammates that most players would never see. Johnson scored the ball well getting to the rim using his strength. Defensively, Johnson has a lot of versatility being able to guard multiple positions. The jumper of Johnson is good enough opponents can’t focus in on his drive. Johnson will be able to help a small college program next year.
