- There is a pretty clear top three teams (Century, Minot, GFRR) based on talent and depth and after the first weekend of play all handled business as expected. Century and Minot wiped out the locals while GFRR beat a solid Minnesota opponent by 21.
- Dalton Feeney would have been a top recruit for the NSIC. There is so much physical ability plus the skill level is high. Had 21 in less than 21 minutes in the opener.
- Austin Wolf has our attention. Playing with the Bismarck Sabers in Grassroots ball this summer he caught attention. In his first varsity game (and the first for his Legacy program) the 6-foot-4 forward had an inspired 30 points and nine boards. Outstanding. A new name to know.
- Andrew Holen may be “the forgotten one”. Yes Dalton Feeney led in numbers, Adam Geiger had the big dunk and 15 points, Luke Leingang had the double/double, but Holen was efficient. He shot 6 of 9, scored 14, had four assists, and zero turnovers. Efficient.
- The big numbers of Wolf are making people not see that sophomore captain Jason Hoekstra of Legacy had 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, and also played a crucial role in that first win.
- Wahpeton may have graduated their top seven scorers from a year ago but they still controlled their game with GF Central despite breaking in a whole new line-up (won 58-39).
Numbers to Know About
- Luke Leingang had an opening season double-double at 10/10
- Minot outscored St. Marys 62-20 in the second half. They started the second half with a 29-3 matching the 29 points they scored in the first half, in just six minutes.
- Connor Hellebust knocked out six three-pointers in his first game of the season on his way to 30 points. Shot 6 of 9 at the arc.
- De’Sean Eikens took 41 shots in the Turtle Mountain game making 20. He scored 46 points with 25 rebounds/
- So how did Jamestown lose? They shot 2 of 28 at the arc compared to 11 of 29 for Turtle Mountain. TM made 11 threes, won by 11 points (95-84).
- Dickinson had 21 turnovers and 15 made field goals. That’s how you lose 59-44 to a team (Bismarck)
- Century had 5 turnovers, St. Mary’s 21. Those 21 turnovers turned into 25 Century points.
- Noah Wanzek made 8 of 12 shots, scored 17, grabbed 9 rebounds in his first game. Solid, but his team fell.
- GFRR had five guys between 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-5 play last Friday and they combined for 54 of the team’s 73 points.
- Carson Zarek had 18 points as Wahpeton beat GC Central by 18.
News and Notes
- NDSU and 2017 junior committed Siman Sem have parted ways recruiting wise so Sem is no longer an NDSU commit. PHD has learned that there was a mutual parting of ways.
- Who are all these newcomers that scored 95 for Turtle Mountain? Junior Seth Gillis, junior Nate LaFountain, and sophomore Tazen Azure. They had a combined 59 points.
- Bismarck had six guys finish in double figures in their win over Mandan.
- NDSU committed Jordan Meidinger got a technical for hanging on the rim. Come on refs….
- The Legacy win was their first win ever as a varsity team as it was their first ever varsity game.
- Bismarck senior forward Ernest Grant had 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists as a nice second to Hellebust. A player to watch.
