Belle Fourche: 6-foot-3 guard Breck Young scored 13.8 a game last year and returns for a team that needs some consistency. Belle Fourche won just two games last year so having their top five guys back is crucial. That also includes guard Jace Horman, now a senior, and juniors Louis Budmayr, Jon Peterson, and Jake O’Byrne. O’Bryne stands 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds…They are expected to be much better because they simply don’t lose much and Young has had some explosive nights…
Custer: The Wildcats won eight games a year ago and bring back a junior class that includes several 6-foot-3 forwards (Alex Kortemeyer, Abe Herman, and Graysen Trandem) as well as Pat Witt. Juniors Blake Martinz and Noah Zacher saw time in the backcourt last season…Problem for Custer is their graduates did most of the scoring so Graysen Trandem, who is 6-foot-2, will have to shoulder a lot of the scoring load…
Hill City: The Rangers were good in away games where they won all five of their contests. Somehow, they couldn’t get a win at home…Of the 16 guys that were in the gym every day last year for varsity/JV practice, seven were freshmen. Only six upperclassmen last year during a five win year…This year’s team will have experience so they need to turn what they have into a positive…Jacob Harris and Wacey Ferguson are returning starters…
Hot Springs: Aaron Noteboom’s Bison won half of their 22 games a year ago. Lead-Deadwood ended the season with a 13 point loss but there were a lot of highlights…Three of the five guys over six feet tall graduated but they still have some size in Riley Stevens and Zion Henderson who are both 6-foot-4…Cade Maciejewski is the top scoring option while Riley Stevens will be the top paint eater…
Lead-Deadwood: The Golddiggers were 12-10 a year ago…There were no juniors in the rotation last season so this is a team that will be completely starting fresh…All starters have graduated…This will be a team with few guys over six feet tall…Juniors Brett Mattson, Dillon Burns, and Max Nelson saw a little time last year but for the most part this is a new club…
Spearfish: Everything is looking up for the 15-7 Spartans. They lost three games to start last season (quality competitive mind you) but once they caught a flow they won 13 of 14 in the middle of the season. Stevens and Sturgis Brown ended their season but Spearfish has a load of momentum because of a now senior class that is loaded with working talent. Add in Jaxon Rosencranz and the loss of six seniors to graduation likely won’t be noticed…Chet Samuelson is the feature player and he, Cole Richards, Devon Braun, and Jaxon Hinch are all returning starters…They were Class AA last year but Class A this season…Jaxon Hinch was a state high jump champion last season…Devon Braun is one of the biggest seniors in the state at 6-foot-7/6-foot-8….
St. Thomas More: Facing a tough schedule the Cavs built up for a late season run which started with a win against Custer and sis games later they beat Lead-Deadwood to play for state…Winner knocked them off in round one of state but More grabbed a couple wins to end the year with eight wins in nine games…Jake Satter and Isaac Kortemeyer are two of the best juniors in the state and they return along with lead guard PJ Freidel from the starting line-up…Tayton Maher is a junior guard that will see a big role. They finished fifth in state last year with the current juniors leading the way…Satter led the state in threes made last season with 94…Freidel is the only senior…
