Prospect Spotlight: Ikechi Chantilou (2020)
The Richmond area has been blessed with a lot of young basketball talent, and has been highlighted by top five nationally ranked Isaiah Todd of John Marshall and 6’7” forward Henry Coleman of Trinity Episcopal, both of whom have seen high major offers already.
With that being said, there’s another sophomore on the Southside of Richmond who is starting to make a name for himself in the city. 6’3” wing guard Ikechi Chantilou stepped into a major role for George Wythe this season, helping lead them to the state semifinals where they fell to cross town rival John Marshall.
While Chantilou had a big season, averaging close to 22 points per game, the sophomore guard hasn’t pulled the attention or offers that the other two have so far. However, that hasn’t discouraged him, if anything it only makes him more hungry moving forward.
“I’m not really worried about that, I know that I can play with them and anyone else so I don’t really care about that,” he said.
With great athleticism, a natural feel for the game on and off the ball and the ability to finish through contact at the rim, Chantilou is able to get his own shot easily. Despite him being able to dominate now, he says he knows he needs to continue to improve on his all around game to get ready for the next level.
“I’m trying to work on getting bigger and improving my handle, and I’m also trying to get my shot a little more consistent,” he said. “I’m a slasher, I like to get to the basket all the time.”
Things are starting to pick up for Chantilou, who holds an offer from Hampton and has picked up recent interest from bigger programs such as VCU and Oklahoma State. As for why coaches should recruit him, he says it’s simple, he’s a winner.
“I’m hungry, I hate losing all I want to do is win.”
Be sure to keep an eye out for Chantilou moving forward, the Southside sophomore stud in Richmond.
