Southfield Christian proved that it was the cream of the crop in Class D basketball. They took home the state championship with a 64-54 win over Buckley. No team finished within 10 points of Southfield Christian throughout the playoffs. Bryce Washington (2018, G, Southfield Christian) was an experienced vegeran and leader for the talented squad.
Bryce Washington proved to be the MVP of the Class D state playoffs. He averaged 23.2ppg and 10rpg in his team’s playoff run. Throughout the post season, Southfield Christian relied on Washington’s versatility. The veteran guard even played center at Breslin so the team could have more speed. “Our goal was to win the championship, so I did whatever role we needed to win each game,” he said. Washington is at his best when attacking the basket where he is an excellent finisher. He has fast straight line speed and is a consistent three point shooter. Washington recently became Southfield Christian’s all-time leading scorer. He is a very good defender who can guard multiple positions.
Bryce Washington is quite simply a leader. Teammates respond to his leadership and brought a veteran mindset to Southfield Christian over the course of the playoffs. Add to this the excellent numbers Bryce Washington put up throughout the playoffs, and you have your Class D Playoffs MVP.
Honorable Mention
Harlond Beverly (2019, G, Southfield Christian)
Beverly could have also been the MVP and nobody would have argued. His playoff performance was top notch. Beverly stuffed the stat sheet in the championship game with 23 points, 8 steals, 7 rebounds, 6 blocks, and 4 assists. He’s a high major Division 1 recruit. Beverly has good size and is great on a pick and roll. He’s a great shooter who is equally as good of a passer.
Joey Weber (2018, G, Buckley)
Weber is a great all around athlete. He’s a multi sport star who was an Honorable Mention All-State soccer player. Weber has led his team to seven straight victories prior to the championship game defeat. In the title game, he had 23 points and 8 rebounds. Weber could be considered the best to ever wear a Buckley jersey.
Caleb Hunter (2019, PG, Southfield Christian)
Every state championship team needs a floor leader. Hunter is that guy for Southfield Christian. He’s an excellent ballhandler who can negate pressure defense. Hunter is a quick player with great feet. In the state finals he had 14 points and 4 rebounds.
