Top Point Guards in 2020
The Class of 2020 rankings are here! While the 2018 class boasted four point guards in the top five overall, the wings in 2020 are much, much stronger. Oddly, there are very few elite 2020 point guards in Memphis heading in to the summer AAU season.
Of course this can all change and rankings are merely a flashpoint of speculation on who will do the most after high school. Still, these players earned their current rankings with play on the court.
If you want to look at the complete rankings, smash here.
The following list reveals the top point guards in the state alongside their statewide overall ranking. The first player listed is the #1 point guard, but #5 overall player in Tennessee in 2020.
#5 Marvin Hughes
Playing with Team Thad 15u last summer, Marvin proved how dominant a player he can be. Hughes is rugged, bouncy, and assured. The growth of Hughes needs to include more vocalized play. Players like striving with and for Hughes. His athleticism is remarkable.
#7 Marcus Fitzgerald Jr.
It was an abbreviated season for Marcus Fitzgerald Jr. The Class of 2020 lefty continues to work on his outside proficiency. Dashing into the lane and beating fullcourt pressure are his strengths right now.
#17 Jalen Montgomery
For Lausanne Collegiate Jalen thrived throughout the season. Montgomery possesses the best size for the position at 6-foot-4. He can handle and distribute. Lausanne has two great scorers (Forrest, Applewhite), Montgomery’s scoring abilities were dampened in 2017-2018.
#18 Jesse Payne
Whitehaven High School needed many sophomores on the floor this year. Payne and Alvin Miles started nightly. With the late-season injury to Matthew Murrell, Payne and Miles became the unabashed sophomore team leaders. Though the team relied upon an older frontcourt both Miles and Payne were tasked with initiating the offense and establishing tempo.
#22 Alvin Miles
Payne’s Whitehaven teammate Miles endured numerous SCIAA trapping defenses with class. The ball-handler didn’t look to score too often, but always made his free throws in the late stages. Miles’ confidence and capabilities belied his age. When college recruiters come along Miles will have to overcome the height discrepancy between their ideal candidate and his 5-foot-6 frame.
#24 Isaiah Cathey
Memphis East High School is loaded with star juniors and Cathey never played meaningful minutes. Still, he has natural strength to fend off pesky defenders.
#25 Dominic Wynn
Ensworth’s starting guard Dominic Wynn has both electric speed and bizarre sophomore strength.
#30 Ray Tyler
Oakland’s starting point guard Keishawn Davison verbally committed to Middle Tennessee back in the fall. Combined with Ray Tyler in the backcourt the pair did a lot of damage in central Tennessee. Tyler is ultra-quick and likes to score. At 5-foot-9 he needs to continue to add bounce, so he can finish as the opponents get taller beyond high school.
#33 Canelius Turner
After Caleb Fields left Marshall County in December, Canelius Turner found plenty of burn at the point position. Canelius is extremely quick with the ball in his hands. He needs to get better at carving up a zone defense.
#35 Javonte Platt
The Stewarts Creek point guard gets into the lane with ease. He scored plenty with his high school team. Now Platt gets to explore the AAU circuit with EAB 16u.
