Oklahoma 2017-2018 ROY
The Oklahoma Rookie of the Year award goes to the top freshman in the state of Oklahoma. The skills our staff looks for in the voting process are production, leadership, and a winner. The Oklahoma 2017-2018 Rookie of the Year is Trey Alexander Heritage Hall Wing. This season Alexander burst onto the scene dominating from start to finish.
Coming into the year Alexander had a lot of hype around his game. Not many fourteen-year-olds can live up to such great expectations, but Alexander did that and more. This year Alexander posted impressive averages of 19.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. Alexander shot 47% and 34% on the season from three-point range. So what makes Alexander so good? Heritage Hall Head Coach Chris Hamilton dissected the game of Alexander.
“He can score at every level,” said Hamilton. ” He finishes with either hand, has great range and can play all positions with a great handle. He has length and athleticism. Trey comes from a basketball family.”
Trey has a long bloodline of great success on the court. Most will remember the span of Alexander’s from the late 1990s through early 2000s. Steven, De’Angelo, and Xavier Alexander each won state titles at Midwest City and went on to play in college and beyond. Steven, Trey’s father has done a great job instilling a great work ethic in him.
“He’s easy to coach,” said Hamilton. “He has a great attitude, works extremely hard, is self-motivated and loves being in the gym.”
This season Alexander shined bright. When the stage got bigger throughout the season in the playoffs, Alexander shined brighter. Anyone who did not know about Alexander before the state championship game in Class 4A was made well aware of his talents. The fourteen-year-old freshman put on a show scoring 27 points, 13 of those points came in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. Alexander lifted his team to victory. What stood out the most in his 27 point MVP performance was he was able to do it efficiently shooting 9-15 from the floor.
Alexander has size, athleticism, skill, and length. Something that will separate him from others around the country that have similar physical traits is his sharp basketball IQ. This is just the beginning of what appears to be a young star.
